5 week old baby all bunged up

After feeding my 5 week old baby at about 2am in the morning she seems really bunged up and I struggle to settle her back down. When I do put her back in the cot she sounds as if she can't breathe properly through her nose. Does anyone have any advice. I planned to use Karvol drops but the bottle says not for under 3 months.

Calpol do saline drops which you squirt up their nose. It tends to make them sneeze any gunge straight out & and DD hated having it done, but it works quite well. I'm sure there are other brands in the chemist. Here

Also you can buy a charming little gadget that sucks the snot out from their little noses. A combined approach of saline/sneeze/snot sucker always worked for DD. Snot sucker here.

Prop up the head of the cot a bit as well (under the legs rather than the mattress for safety). That ought to help the mucus drain away a bit better. Hope you all get some sleep soon.

Thank you for that! I've never heard of those drops will go and get some tomorrow!

I used a karvol plug in across the room from my baby at that age, its not too strong and really helps.

second the saline drops - don't have to be calpol - just ask the pharmacist. A nose sucker is a very useful thing (there is a hardcore MNer who just sucked out snot with her mouth, but blergh - I'll use a nasal aspirator thanks )

Steam can help - obv don't hang her over a boiling kettle, but having her in the same room as a hot shower might help get things moving.
