Allergy to antibacterial rxed to treat possible UTI

Can anyone help? My 14 month old was prescribed Trimethroprim (sp?) to treat a possible UTI (blood, white blood cells and leukocytes present in urine), but he developed a blotchy red and spotty rash, severe upset tummy, became angry and irritable, and so he's been told to come off the course, with one day to go, but hasn't been put on anything else. If he's not on anything else, doesn't that mean the UTI could come back with a vengeance as he's not completed the course? Has anyone experienced this?
Thanks,
worried mum
