Giardia! Please - what to expect from the antibiotics

DS1 has been tested for giardia (horrible intestinal parasite). No idea how he got it but I think my DD and I have it now. Also have a 3 mo DS and I'm TERRIFIED he will get it too. Has anyone had this and how did you fare with the antibiotics, which I've heard can be really nasty? Any info please!!

I had it in south america, pre-kids.
the metronidazole was blessed relief from the ghastly giardiasis symptoms. can't remember any drug side effects. was really ill for 6 days until the giardia protozoa left my system.

it is terrifically easy to pass along in families. do your best with hygiene at changing and feeding. wish you all a speedy recovery.

We had it last year oct/nov time, all of us. Started off either DH or DD then we all ended up with it. Was awful, but we had to wait about weeks for a diagnosis from dr (dh signed off work for weeks was so bad), despite my walking into initial appointement and saying "I think we all have giardia" (found out on MN)

I had previously had a reaction to metronizadole (hallucinations) so was given a different anti biotic and was fine. DH had metronizadole, pretty hefty doses for 3 days ish and hated it, kids were ok on antibiotics but had been really sick prior.

I would say it knocked us for six though, kids immune sytstems seemed majorly low and are just getting back to normal now. DH lost 2 stone i managed not to loose any weight somehow

Much sympathy, everytime we burp dh and I get paranoid we could have it again it was so awful

hello ld, i was just looking for you to come post! you ust be on high alert for giardia nowadays, you poor thing.

DD had it twice. It seemed to go away the first time, but didn't. I'm not sure if the second episode was just the first one not being cleared properly.
Like someone else said, the antibiotics really flattened her immune system.

DS1 been finished his 3-day course of antibiotics yesterday but still doing weird fatty-like poos. I guess it takes time to get out of the system? How long should I expect these?

Just taken the cat ot vets in case he gave it to us.....
