paranoia of HIV after DD cut toe at pool

Hi, I'm new to mumsnet although often read threads for advice in past. I'm in a panic DD who is 7 cut toe in local pool (not badly) but some bleeding during shower/changing.

DH was with her not me so I did not see if she stepped in anything, he would think I am mad but can't stop thinking she could get HIV from someones blood on floor. She has Hep B vaccine done so no risk there. Am I crazy, can you get it like this?

Genuine question, do you have anxiety issues? Because I would say that's not a normal reaction to a cut toe.

cyb · 23/03/2010 18:57

The risk is negligable.

thisisyesterday · 23/03/2010 18:57

it's very, very, very, very unlikely!
i am sure, technically, that it could be possible.
but the HIV virus is very fragile and doesn't live long outside. I also suspect (but don't know) that the chemicals used to treat the water in pools would also have an effect on the life of the virus.

on top of that you are also supposing that an HIV positive person has cut themself, managed to get blood on the floor, and that your dd has then trodden in it enough to get their blood into her foot.

really, she doesn't have HIV

No chance - need to have sex with someone, or share injecting equipment... even then it is quite difficult to contract.

Cannot get it from toilet seats either!

Infecting a superficial cut with HIV is v difficult, when you cut yourself the area becomes gorged with blood and cells to protect the wound and make it v hard for anything to reach the bloodstream. It would have to be a very deep cut like a tooth removal.

Please don't worry.

winnybella · 23/03/2010 19:34

She's more likely to have contracted verucca-well, that actually is v.likely if you're not wearing flip-flops in the shower.

She does not have HIV.

You seem to have health anxiety issues, though. Do you worry all the time about things like that?

The HIV virus is very, very difficult to contract as it is so fragile outside the human vector (unlike Hep B). However, the circumstances you describe would make it unlikely that should could contract anything at all. Children cut themselves on all sorts of things in all sorts of places and you perhaps need to rationalise the risks from that or you could drive yourself crazy!

i guess I am a little paranoid about my kids health! Thanx guys you have made me feel better (and silly) which is kind of how I want to feel over something like this.

HIV? I'd be more worried about tetanus
