swollen lymph nodes behind ear of 15wk old...

I am unecessarily concerned aren't i? I worry so much these days, about everything! DS just seems so vulnerable and I feel so protective!

He has had a cough/cold/bug pretty much since christmas, who knows what it is, Dr is not concerned. I pointed out a tiny pea sized solid lump behind his right ear to him this week, he just said it was a swollen lymph node, no other explanation, no concern shown, just like, one of those things.

It causes no pain, and apart from his constant mucous and coughing/gurgling he is a very happy boy, who feeds well, and produces wet nappies, but very very runny poo atm.

Dr is right isn't he? Or should I just take him back to see the other gp who used to be a paediatrician? Just for second opinion.

DH thinks I am crazy for worrying about everything. i was not so bad with DD!

I am guessing it is a virus, maybe he has just had a permanent virus for the last couple of months, winter baby as dr said.

My ds is 16 months and almost permanently has these swollen glands. The doctor just says it's due to viruses and he also has eczema on the back of his head which could be a cause.

my ds used to have a gland in his neck that swelled up.Used to really worry me but doc said it was fine.

PavlovtheCat · 14/03/2010 15:32

Thanks, its good to hear its normal.

DH said stop googling and if I am concerned see the gp, as I will only worry more, so i have stopped googling!

hi pavlov, i hope your ds is much much better and the lymph nodes have gone. now i'm sure your ds is perfectly fine, but i have to share my experience. dd, 6, had swollen lymph nodes behind her ear for a month in dec, and she kept having fever on and off, and i took her to our usual paed 3-4 times and he kept saying it was nothing to be worried about and i didnt want to seem like a paranoid parent so i didnt question him. in the end we saw another paed who took several blood tests and it turned out to be leukaemia. i am NOT saying your ds has leukaemia of course, but if he still has the lymph nodes, maybe it would be best to do blood tests to RULE OUT anything serious? xx

Hi Pav, my dd has the same thing, has had it since birth. Saw gp for 8wk check and he said it was prob just due to her having some cradle cap

Anyway it's still there and I too am worried and would like it checked out so I'm going to make an appointment for next week, they'll probably just look at me with pity, pat me on the head and send me on my way

(Easyeggs btw)

My DD 11 weeks old has the same, little pea sized lump behind her ear. Been told by doctor and health visitor that its normal, you can sometimes feel lymph nodes in babies necks because there are a few of them in that area..im still a bit worried too so know how you feel!

missmoopy · 19/03/2010 19:17

My dd (now 5) had three pea sized lumps in her neck when she was 2-3 and I worried myself sick. After various trips to doctor we had blood tests and all was well. She gets every bug going but is otherwise growing, meeting developmental targets and that was why our doctor was convinced she was ok.

However if you are still worried talk to your Gp.

winnybella · 19/03/2010 19:26

I asked DD's doctor about one pea-sized lump behind her ear. She said it's a lymph node and that you can feel them more in babies and it's normal. When I asked why I can't feel one on the other side she said that one is probably smaller, they don't have to be perfectly symmetrical/ identical.

winnybella · 19/03/2010 19:28

Oh, and DD's doctor IS a paediatrician ( France, different system, adults go to GPs, kids to paediatricians)- and a very good one, too.

Please help I'm very worried about my ds, he's 22mnths old and has had the pes sized lumps for ages now and doc said it was fine. In jan he got a rely swollen gland in his neck, the doc said it would be due to a virus. It is still there now and really prominent, they took blood and said the levels were fine it just came back that his lymph nodes were swollen which we knew, she's referring him to the hospital now cause it's quite big and wanted to repeat blood tests in 6 weeks. The thing is he's at nursery and ways has a cold and I am worried it's a symtom of something more serious, if anyone has any advice or experience I'd really appreciate it cause I'm petrified. He is a happy normal child and doesn't seem ill but it's still scary
