Nasty rash on face and bum in 18mo

DS has a general dribble rash round his mouth. On thursday night his temp was a bit high. Friday he woke up with a crop of red spots, looking a bit like acne, on his chin. Since yesterday they have spread to his cheeks a bit and also on his bum, upper thighs and backs of knees, though less. His temp is fine although he has been grotty in himself and has a runny nose today.

I will take him to the GP tomo but it looks like something viral I think. I thought it might be cold sores first outbreak, but it's on the chin rather than mouth and now on his bum. There is nothing on his tummy or back, and he seems fairly well.

Any ideas? Ring any bells?

Are the spots blistering at all? it sounds like it could be chicken pox.

Not really, they are a bit wet looking as he dribbles so much but they aren't typical chicken pox blisters. He isn' t bothered by them at all either so I don't think they are itchy or sore.
