spots right on the back of ds tongue

noticed today several spots (not white) right at the very back of ds tongue - he is suffering from chest infection/cold/cough at mo.

any ideas?

Sometimes the taste buds at the back of the tongue appear as spots - they are called circumvallate papillae so it could be that.
