Cranial Osteopathy - Did it work for you or not ?

I'm a bit skeptical to be honest but have heard lots of people rave about CO.

DS has had 2 sessions so far and I'm not convinced there is any major difference. He does seem a bit calmer when he's awake but still wakes hourly at night and feeds constantly. His new calmness also coincides with recovering from an ear infection/cold etc. which I think is probably more likely to have been responsible for the improvement.

So, if it did work for you, how many sessions did you need ? DH in particular is not keen on spending money on many more sessions. I'm sure I'd heard that if there was no major improvement after 3 sessions, then it was unlikely to be worthwhile carrying on.

Would be grateful for your experiences

DS1 had 5 perforated eardrums in hte first 5 months of his life. We saw a CO for 3 sessions and he hasn't had an ear infection since (3 years later)
We did it along side seeing the ENT specialist at the hospital who agreed that there had been a change but he couldn't explain what.

He has seen CO work over the years but could not exlain it at all.

hotpotmama · 02/02/2010 13:45

Yes, it worked brilliantly on my first DS, was good with my second and third DSs.

I would recommend it to anyone, not just for colic for many things. My DS1 had constipation for about a week and was being treated for colic. Told the CO about it, he did a bit of work on his bowel area and he pooed within a few hours, could have been a coincidence but I don't think so.

Mine were always so much calmer after having CO, it was a life saver for me!

Lizcat · 02/02/2010 13:48

Like bythepowerofgreyskull my DD suffered terrible ear problems leading to a life threatenting mastoid abscess at 5 months of age. Again 3 sessions with the CO and she has never had another problem and was monitored by ENT till she was 4 years old.
My DD had a very traumatic birth mispresentation 3 failed attempts to represented and forceps delivery and the CO reckoned all that lead to the ear problems.
I did notice that blocked tear ducts open up after the fist session.

SoupDragon · 02/02/2010 13:51

"Mine were always so much calmer after having CO"

Unfortunately, I experienced the opposite. It did clear a lot of congestion from DD's nose though.

BigBadMummy · 02/02/2010 13:53

I have't tried it on my DCs but I have had it and the chap who did it has done it on thousands of children.

I have talked on here about him before and said how fabulous he is.

He diagnosed that I had been dropped on my head as a child, something I had never been told.

I am certainly much calmer and able to deal with stress after it.

Tillyscoutsmum · 02/02/2010 15:32

Thanks all. So how many sessions did you have and how regularly ? Did you just have them over a short period of time (say, weekly for a few sessions) or less frequently over a longer period ?

DS had double ear infection and perforated ear drums last week (at 6 weeks), His birth was fairly traumatic - 10lb 5 oz, back to back and took 60 hours of contractions to turn and get to 5cm dilated, then went from 5cm to being born in 40 mins after my water's were broken. DH actually saw him/my bump drop

He screamed horribly all the way through both sessions but slept a bit better after the second session (he did his first 3 hour stint ). Unfortunately, it was for one night only

I was going to update my thread about this

DD (16 weeks, feeding 2 hourly) had had 2 sessions and things have improved a lot

During the first session her posture visibly changed - it was remarkable

she was ramrod straight and when i picked her up she would be away from me - she now curls into me

during the second session the week after he stopped about 20 mins in and said we were done

DD is now much calmer, sleeping better and more settled - her hiccups have reduced in frequency and severity and i really think it has helped

We are back for a top up next week

DD cries during some parts of the sessions but the CO takes it all in his stride

BigBadMummy · 02/02/2010 16:03

I had one a week for four months.

Will definitely go back but work at the moment is stopping me going out!

hotpotmama · 02/02/2010 18:03

One a week, they each had about 5 sessions. Not cheap but would have paid double for what they did!

fanjolinaballerina · 03/02/2010 12:39

No, rubbish. Expensive witch doctory IMO.

mistlethrush · 03/02/2010 13:01

Colic went after 3 sessions - no tailing off, just vanished. And it helped with congestion when ds was a bit older.

Well the witch doctor worked wonders for me,3 times!!!

NHS doctor just said " If I had a penny for every mother that has been in here with a baby with colic....", offered no help and rolled his eyes at CO.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 03/02/2010 14:37

It totally worked for my son and he had 6-10 sessions. I just loved going and seeing him laid there all chilled. Not so good when the CO did something and DS filled his nappy.

Tillyscoutsmum · 03/02/2010 16:05

Thanks everyone. DH refers to it as voodoo unfortunately

I think we'll persevere for another couple of sessions. One last question. Does anyone know if changing therapists would be like starting again or whether any good done so far would be continued ? The guy I have been going to is lovely but he's been an hour late for both appointments (not much fun in a cramped waiting room with a screaming baby) and his office is up 4 flights of stairs

fanjo - is that just your opinion or experience? And based on what?

midnightexpress · 03/02/2010 16:08

I tried it with both of mine when they were tiny, withg two different practitioners and tbh noticed absolutely no difference whatsoever. Gave it a few sessions each time, but I remain very sceptical.
