How to treat a cough in 17 mth old

My DD has a chesty cough, it's stopping her napping and waking her at night. We've all had this cough in our family, it's not serious, just irritating.

I'm now taking an expectorant cough medicine but my concern is that I've had the cough 4 weeks now and it doesn't appear to be getting any better (although don't believe I require a visit to the Dr as am otherwise ok) so do I just sit tight and wait for my daughter's cough to get worse as there's nothing bar calpol (or a glycerin soothing medicine which seems to be doing nothing) that I can give her. It seems only a matter of time before it will move onto her chest then it will be a case of antibiotics.

Just feel a bit helpless really, is there anything else I can do?
