Am I going mad or can newly emerged teeth disappear again?

So DS is five months old and has been teething forever - drooling, pain, chewing, visible teeth just under gum etc but with nothing emerging. Then a couple of days ago I felt a tooth edge finally pop through, not the bottom two which I think are normally first, but a top front one, and just a sliver.
Now I was sure I felt it as it was cold and hard and v different from his gums and I could see the tiniest fleck of white. But.... today I can't feel that edge anymore? Am I delusional - or can teeth do that, and disappear back in again? Oh god I don't know if I can take the palava again, he was utterly miserable the day it first appeared.

Bugger. Thanks for confirming I'm not quite certifiable just yet though...
