11 month old general anaesthetic on monday. Experiences please?

My daughter is having a tenotomy (to cut the achilles tendon) on monday. She had the op before under a local at 8 weeks old but now she's bigger and more wriggly docs are doing a general instead. The surgery itself is fairly minor but I'm just wondering what to expect in terms of her recovery from the GA. Any thoughts?

my nephew has to have a general every 6 months to have mri scans. he recovers really quickly and never remembers a thing. the process of putting them to sleep is the most upsetting. they use a mask as they cant use injection. they are usually put on ward for a few hours afterwards then allowed to go home. good luck and she will be fine. its usually the parent who are upset by it all not the child.

DD had a general at 12 months. I found it quite upsetting, but she was fine and went home the same day.
She had an operation to open up the tubes in the corner of her eyes, fairly minor.

I had already dealt with DS when he had a general for a hernia when DH was out of the country. So I did have an idea of what to expect.
But, DS was 5 and it was horrible when they gave him the general and he went to sleep and I had to go back to the ward and wait.
So, with DD, it was DH's turn. They took them into a little room, I waited outside. DH held her in his arms and they gave her the genral and he said it was the worst experience of his life. She just went all limp and he had to hand her over to the nurse.
Be prepared for this bit, it is the worst feeling ever.
After the op, I could hear her comimg up in the lift, screaming the place down for her blankie, so I knew she was alright.
She recovered fine and we went home the same day.
DS also was discharged the same day, after his op, in fact he walked to the car and was out playing football within a couple of days.

DS had a GA aged about 15m he was fine, just tried and groggy for a while but just fine. The ward had a play specialist who came to the theatre with us and played with him while I held him and they did the GA it really helped to calm him and take my mind off it ifykim.

My dd had a GA a couple of weeks ago, she was gassed down first then they intubated her. She was more upset about the drip being insitu afterwards TBH. Do ask for some anti emetic to be given IV. Our dd suffered hideously from vomitting up to 24 hours after the event.

well she had it and it was fine. Horrid when they put her under as she was very upset by the mask but she was like a happy drunk when she came around and apart from a little bit sick this morning, no after effects. She's not in much pain either thank goodness so I'm very relieved. Thanks everyone for your commments.

Glad your DD was ok! My DS has to have GA for a minor operation next month and this has made me feel a bit better about it.
