help please! question about 13 month olds mouth and tonsillitus

ds2 has had tonsilitus (sp) before and i could see that he was coming down with it again so took him to gp xmas eve and they said he was ok but yes probably did have beginning of it. Gave me a script for anti b's esp because of his history (ENT probs) so i started them yesterday but i noticed on monday his tongue had white bits all over it like when a newborn is drinking milk and has some on tongue, gp didnt mention it so i forgot about it but today its all around his lips on the inside. He is eating and drinking i dont think hurtibg him.....

what could this be? Look like lots of ulcers?

sounds like it might be thrush (which can be brought on by ABs)

he needs some daktarin oral gel (you can get that OTC) or nystatin drops from your GP.Poor thing sore mouths are horrible.

his tongue had white bits on it on monday when i saw the gp but he didnt mention it....

he had about 5 hours sleep last night and today there are ulcers all in his mouth, around the insides of his lips. waiting for gp to ring but prob take hours

I hope you've seen the doctor again mad4; sounds pretty nasty, the poor wee thing .

We all had a horrible throat lurgy a few weeks ago, with blisters in mouths; it might be something like that?

as twelvedaisy said...it is more than likely to be thrush....another visit to docs for some nystatin i think..the gel doesnt always work well over larger areas.

thanks guys, doc said prpbably thrush so have that stuff beginning with N. Its a liquid but he obviously wont keep it in his mouth! Just swallows it but i think its helped abit already

just drip the 1ml of nystan, slowly on to his tongue,all over and then it stays in the mouth longer.

Either drip it slowly into both corners of his mouth and then his toungue (may be easier to do it with a oral/medicine syringe rather then the dropper that comes with the bottle)

Or even better...

Put half of it on something like a soother/dummy (ie something not absorbent and safe to put in his mouth) and swish the dummy/whatever you used around his mouth to coat it... then put the other half in his mouth as you would with any other medicine.

helps to try and coat the mouth but will still work/coat his mouth to a certain degree if he appears to swallow it all.

Im a childrens nurse... this is how i tend to give nystatin.
