I've been prescribed amoxicillin but DS (10mths) already on it - should I take it - I'm BF?

I was prescribed it last week but after taking if for a day it gave DS an upset stomach (I think - he had v runny nappies). He's now been prescribed it for a chest infection, and although was a bit sick on it seems OK. However, I am now getting worse and would like to start taking it again but don't want to get too much into DS via BF.

If I take it how much comes through breast milk and will it be too much for DS. DS is on 2.5m; 3 times a day, I was on 1 tablet 3 times a day.

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Amoxicillin is an anitbiotic, you don't say why you have been prescribed it .... you may not get better for ages with out it ... I suggest you take it as prescribed unless you want to be to ill to care for you child at all .......

ooops sorry antibiotic

Sorry - nI've had a bad cough for about 2 weeks. I've aslo now got a sore throat and aching a bit..

That's the dilemma really, should I take it and risk giving him too much via his own and breast milk (how much is too much), but at least then I might get better.

Wasn't sure if it was something I really shouldn't do (and forgot to ask the doctor when I saw him).

Is this your first baby? Honestly just take the medicine and get better. Your baby will be absolutely fine ... he needs you more as a healthy mum ... the doctor would not be prescribing it to you otherwise .... it'll be fine ...

No, he's my second,so not being PFB, being sensible. Just thought I would come on and ask if anyone knew for sure.

I know that they give antibiotics in higher doses to babies so probably should just take it. I think I'm so tired I can't think straight to be honest.

reasonable question I think

did the prescriber know that your ds was on them as well?

MyCatHasARedderNoseThanRudolph · 20/12/2009 17:42

No, my sleep deprived brain forgot to say. I'll prob just hold off now and give doc a call tomorrow.

Thank you for your responses.

Thank you alypaly. That is helpful.

I'm feeling a bit better now so will hold off on taking it. Hopefully I'll manage to pass on antibodies for whatever I've had to my DS - who is also looking a lot brighter.
