Eczema question. (Exema? Ecsema? See, we've had so little to do with it I'm not even sure how to spell it)

So, DS is 8 and gets eczema once in a blue moon. Usually I just stick with the same washing powder, and all is well.

DS announced this evening he's got an itchy rash all up the inside of his legs and slightly on the back of his knees. Looks like eczema so I covered it with aqueous cream.

Then DS complained mightily because it stings. We had to wash it off in the shower.

Does aqueous cream normally sting? DS remembered last time the same thing happened (as I said, it's not a regular occurence, and I can't remember how we sorted the problem last time...)

Or is it because it's such a big area?

if my skin has got very chapped (and I have eczema) it stings to start with when I try to moisturise it.

do you have any oilatum bath stuff? I find that if I have a bath in oilatum before moisturising it seems to take the initial sting out.

we had this this summer with ds1's skin as he had this reaction to suntan lotions

Aqueous cream is not recommended for eczema sufferers as a lot of them are allergic to it. Similarly E45.

A specialist emollient like Doublebase or Aveeno should help.

We haven't got any of the bath stuff. We had some when he was 2, but I chucked it out last year cos we hadn't used it since.

Sensible idea though, I'll look at getting some tomorrow.

I was amazed DS hasn't mentioned it till now (the rash that is) It looked quite bad to me.

If he still needs a bath tonight then put some oats in an old sock or pair of tights, tie a knot then squeeze in the water -- will make it lovely and soft

Oh good lord, he's in bed now. He'd love to stay up, and would do very happily, but no, I need some peace and quiet.

No oats, would have to be Ready Brek! Might not have the same effect...

Ever tried that Aveeno bath stuff? I've been told it's a bit like bathing in porridge... a relative with psoriasis says it's very good.
