Chest Virus, 40+ temp, trip to hospital...so....

...why does DD keep saying her tummy hurts?

Can anyone please explain this to me? Doc said that the glands in the stomach can be sore with a virus as severe as the one DD has - is this a common thing? DD is 2.6 and has had her fair share of colds/ear infects /toncilitis etc but I have never had a sore tummy?

Aghhhhhhhhh. What a day. She was up from 1am last night with this tummy pain and high temps. Then rallied wonderfully this morning, went to the GP who gave her a totally clean bill of health other than a viral resp tract infection which was apparently nothing to worry about and we should just carry on as normal. So, she was very bouncy and wanted to go to the nursery so she went. Clean bill of health and all!

An hour later she had a temp of almost 40, shaking uncontrollably, crying screaming about her tummy. My DD does not often complain and she was very ill so we went to A&E on the advice of NHS direct.

VVVVVV nice at the hospital, put her on the ward to see a paed consol who said viral chest/lung with sore ears and throat and tummy but nothing to be done other than pain killers as not bacterial.

So, she is now in bed, hot still even though we have given calpol and nurofen as instructed.

Any ideas please? She has not been the same since the chicken pox 6 weeks ago and I have been giving vitamins and probiotics. She also gets constipated and witholds so this I imagine is not helping.

Apologies, tired and stressed and fed up and feeling rather sorry for oneself.

children this young are not skilled at locating exactly where it hurts

complaints of tummy pain are actually common for a whole range of ailments from chest pain, sore throat, ear infections etc etc

they just know something hurts IYSWIM

Oh I see, yes, this is a very good thought. She is tiny too (tall but slight) so I imagine anywhere on her torso would be classed as sore.

She coughed for 3 days straight last week, can little people pull tummy muscles?

Agree that her tummy is hurt because of all the coughing and general malaise. Also she could be digesting phlem that they just can't blow out at that age which will make her feel awful.
Really hope she feels better soon - but keep a eye on things as a bacterial infection could still arise out of a viral one. It did with DD last weekend.

Little people can definitely pull tummy muscles.

When I was little, I used to tell my parents that my 'tummy hurt' when my asthma was bad and I couldn't breathe.

Could she be doing the same thing if it's a lung thing?

Does 'my tummy hurts' mean something else to her? Like 'I don't feel very well'?

BooHoo - I know you are right, have a docs appointment already pencilled in for Thursday to check ears and chest again.

Pixie - DD is really articulate for her age and can show me where things hurt. She also is a BIG Charlie and Lola fan so usually uses the 'I am totally and completely not well' line if she feels poorly. She did point lots to her tummy but I am also def sold on the phlegm digestion/pulled muscles/just feeling rubbish angle too.

Sigh. I hate high temps, scary monkeys.

High temps are really the worst. The best thing you can do is just be there and monitor if she gets floppy, that the meds ARE working and bringing it down after 40 mins lots of comfort and reassurance. Yes do keep getting her checked as often as you can - they can develop other infections so quickly.

I really hope she picks up soon.x

sounds like she has a version of mesenteric adenitis causing tuumy pain

BooHoo - is 40 mins the standard time she needs to respond in? Was about an hour and a half today at hospital. I would love to give nurofen now but she is sleeping and would not take it if I woke her.

Needansme - Def sounds like the lymph nodes might be swollen, she is being quite expletive about it.

Oh dear, got to go, just woken up screaming again ..

Yes 45 mins should be kicking in really, although if the fever is spiking it may take longer to absorb.

Ae they really sure this is not bacterial? Is she vomiting?

quite often children get a sore tummy due to inflamed glands in the abdomen . it is called mesenteric adenitis and gives non specific abdo painwww.patient.co.uk/health/Mesenteric-Adenitis.htm

Booboo - not vomitting. I have woken up with it now!! Ahhhhhhh. Will monitor temp today and book drs if she keeps spiking.

Thanks alypaly - what a horrible addition to what is obviously a really nasty buglet.

Very very poorly today, temp 39.8, calpol had no effect, nurofen worked a bit. So then about 6pm when I was going to take her back to the hospital she vomited all over me. Temp dropped 2 degrees within minutes!!! I am so hoping for a better day tomorrow.

It is really blimin cold eh herbie, dreading having to take dd to the docs as that means taking her out in thr cold. Hope your ds improves soonest.

DS 14 had pneumonia recently and his only symptoms were very high temperature and stomach ache.

I think the pneumonia DS has was called a "walking pneumonia"

The only reason he ended up in hospital is because he had a febrile convulsion (has GEFS+). They did an xray which showed a shadow on the lung, but he had no breathing problems, cough or anything, just a stomach ache and the very high temperature. They only kept him over night to get over the fc, although they did say he could stay longer if he wanted to.

Hello guys, just back from the gp after another dreadful night and dd has pleurisy. I knew in my mummy-intuition it wasn't just a virus!!!

A bit upset about it, surely she must have had it for days to have been in so much pain??

I always watch D like a hawk with any cold virus because I know so many have turned into a secondary infection and the Drs have kept fobbing me off and say wait for it to clear.

You can really tell when it does turn bacterial as the fever gets higher, starts responding less to calpol/Nurof. they start to vomit and complain of tummy pain. This happens really quickly.

I really hope she gets better soon. Are you giving her a vitamin supplement? Chicken soup is also brilliant for chest problems and just keeping them indoors with the steamer on - my life for the last 2 weeks!
