Suspected conjuntivitis in DD(3) - can she go to nursery?

DD came home from nursery at lunchtime today with a gunky eye. Have got the drops from chemist and battling to get them in her eyes every hour since - she ends up crying which must defeat the object! Anyway....

Can she go back to nursery tomorrow do you reckon? Pretty sure it came from there in the first place!

I'm pretty sure the answer will be no. It's contagious.

HuwEdwards · 25/11/2009 22:12

That's where they pick up all the infections, but unfortunately they have to try and break the cycle. So no, she shouldn't go till it's gone.

gigglewitch · 25/11/2009 22:13

technically if she has got conjunctivitis, then no she shouldn't go in as it's wildly contagious as you already know... it is a pita as you know that's where she got it in the first place, but there you go
Are you sure it's not cold in it? I only ask because I dragged ds2 to the doctors, kept him off school and everything, and the doc took a quick look and said that it wasn't conjunctivitis at all
Maybe get her checked - optician / gp / pharmacist?

displayuntilbestbefore · 25/11/2009 22:14

no - keep her off until it's cleared up.
Did you see the gp - of not and you're not sure what the gunk is down to, get it checked out to rule out anything else that may have irritated her eye. My ds had sudden gunky eye after getting toy poked in eye so if not already seen doc, I would advise and then you know for sure.

tumshe · 25/11/2009 22:15

agree get her checked but if it is she will need to stay off till its cleared. Hope it clears soon, its miserable.

biglips · 25/11/2009 22:15

get her checked out before she goes back to nursery or otherwise the other childrens possibly will catch it

Daffodilly · 25/11/2009 22:23

Not sure it is conjunctivitis - she has a cold too. Was fine first thing this morning, picked her up and noticed she had yellowish goop in corner of one eye, and within couple of hours it was in both. She was rubbing them a lot too - despite my pleas not to.

Pharmacist said it was conjunctivitis - but she only glanced from a distance. Guess I will see how she is in AM. PITA to keep her off as it will then mean DS can't go to his baby group either and I will be stuck at home with the two of them...sigh.

Sorry chaps - but much as I disapprove (as a childminder) page 2 (towards the bottom) of this says no exclusion necessary

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/11/2009 22:37

depends which type of conjunctivitis it is. viral - fine - not contagious, often seen with a cold.
bacterial - not fine - is very contagious.

bacterial is the one that makes the goo, makes their eyes stick together and go crusty.

worked in optics for 10 years. id say if its the latter then no nursery!
