dd in alot of pain, i think cystitis, any help out there?

She said she felt like her wee was hurting her today, when she passed water I mean.

Found it hard to hold in a wee when told she couldn't go till break time, but has said it was about a 5-10 wait. (grrr)

I have made her drink two glasses of water and given her infact paracetamol. She can't wee, is only doing drips and is reluctant to 'let go' or push her wee out as it's making her cry out.

I guess i can just wait till 2morrow then see gp. Is there anything else i can do?

my dd is a constant sufferer. Phone out of hours gp. It is an emergency. cant believe she will get any sleep feeling like that poor love.

Poor little soul - I used to get this as a child and then all the way through my twenties. Can anyone nip out for a cranberry juice for you?

out of hours surgery is 14 miles in a small hospital!! and i suppose they must have some sort of chemist on site?

Am single mum so would have to take her out.

Yes - if I were you I'd take her out and get some juice though. I remember knocking it on the head by drinking gallons of water as a rule but a couple of times I actually starting passing bits of tissue (sorry----tmi!!!) which was so painful, and the water didn't help at all. I think it works by 'flushing' the infection out iyswim?

I think I read that it can create scarring in your bladder which makes a recurrence more likely.

The cranberry seems to have something good in it that works against the actual infection and I wish wish wish we'd known about it when I was little, as I think I might have been spared quite so many episodes later on.

Oh, poor wee soul. DD has had this a few times and it is so painful.

If you cannot get to a GP/chemist tonight, then keep giving her drinks and encourage her to wee as often as possible.

If it gets worse or she develops a fever then phone NHS direct for advice. You have to be careful that the infection does not travel up to the kidneys, that happened to DD the first time she had it.

ok, out of hours will ringback in prob half an hour, so i am going in car hoping to catch garge open, with dd.

Yes cranberry juice or some of that powder stuff in water (it tastes horrible IMO, sweet though so she might like it) - poor thing. I find if I can hold on for as long as possible it helps. Also sitting in a warm (not hot) bath might be soothing.

Sorry meant to say, better to hold on because it feels as though you need to go constantly and then when you only do drips it hurts and wiping can irritate things further, so I found if I could just ignore it for as long as possible so that by the time I did go I at least had a dribble (rather than a drop or 2) it was better. Have only had it a couple of times but that's my advice

she went for a longer wee just now, yelped out. nhs direct, i rang them and was told it could take up to 4 hours for a ring back. I thought i was ringing out of hours, oops!

The other nuber i can ring (from my surgerie's answerphone message)is for emergencies only.

dd is drinking cranberry juice as we speak. Do i just take her to surgey first thing and dose her up with paracetamol ( which have already done) and maybe try giving kid's nurophen on top?

If she can sleep then I would leave her till tomorrow. If she is in a lot of pain, that means that she cannot sleep then call the emergency number.

tbh id ring now. cranberry juice is more preventative than a cure. cystitus is horribly painful and can quickly turn nasty - ive only ever had it a few times but i did have it once as a child and i remember it well!

adults can take powders to dissolve in water but children cant - i think id be inclined to phone out of hours gp - thats what its there for.

Was there not something in the news recently about cranberry juice not actually working? Will have a look and see if I can find it.

Yes, if you feel it is necessary then phone the out of hours surgery.

Hope she's feeling better soon. I disagree that Cranberry juice is more of a preventative thing - I suffered from it for years and it was the only thing that knocked it on the head (and quickest) for me...there's something magic in it as far as I'm concerned! Medicines took ages to work and relief within an hour or two of drinking glasses of the juice. I swear by the stuff and should probably take shares in it

i had it in august - i drank lemon barley, but it got a bit out of hand - i needed antibiotics.

The cranberry juice does something to stop the infections sticking to the walls of the bladder. Something like that anyway

Don't encourage her to hold on, I've had it quite a few times and nhs direct always said to keep going whenever I needed to. Sitting in the bath to wee does help a little.

Paracetamol might help a bit but IME doesn't really take the pain away as it is stingy/burny down there...

Would definately call emergency number, it's awful to have and must be worse when you're little.

That link says it's 'not clear' if it works as a treatment (it absolutely does for me!), and there's good evidence to suggest it preventative. I don't like the taste at all but as far as I am concerned it works better for me than anything else. It was like a revelation for me when I discovered it! Hope your DD is able to get some sleep and feels better soon piratecat, it's such an unpleasant thing to get.

I rang out of hours, advice based on symptoms was to see how she goes, because the antobiotocs won't kick in till lunchtime anyhow?

They were really helpful, and said of course to ring back if gets worse, but there is only one gp on, and i have to ring to make sure he's 'in', ie not trawling to someone's farm somewhere ala james Herriot style.

She's gonna still be in pain weeing with or without meds, so i'll get to gp first appt i can in morning.

Lemon barley NOT cranberry once it has started It makes it worse.Poor thing xx

wil lay off the cranberry fo rnow, am hoping she gets some rest.

am reading bicarb added to water (alkaline rather than acidic)is better, and also good friend who works in healthfood shop suggested it, . god sounds hellish.
