Weird mark (like a bite? scabbed spot?) with strange spreading mark around it...?

DS has a mystery scabby mark on his leg. Like a scabbed over spot or bite. I wouldn't normally worry, but I notice there is a weird mark all around it also, like a 'collar' of bruising or summat. It is more like a grey or purple ring about 2-3mm away from the scabby bit. It almost looks like the mark you get when paint or ink spreads on wet paper IYSWIM... I have never seen anything like it before

Is this some kind of weird bite? Or does it sound like an infection? I am a bit about taking him to GP when they're SO busy right now if I'm wasting their time.

Any advice gratefully received! Thanks.

Thanks for the gorgeous slideshow!

GP said he thought it was an insect bite but the collar was just bruising (it is now turning from blueish to yellowish) and not the typical 'reddish' bullseye of Lyme Disease/tick bite. We're to keep an eye on DS for fever etc..

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I know now where to look if I want to terrify the crap out of myself diagnose insect bites

my pleasure....love the one of the tick trying to get in!!!!!!!!!!The bed bugs a hideous arent they.Bet you looked through them all tho!!!!!
TBH it sounded like an insect bite from your description. Grass fleas bite and fall off..but animal fleas also get rubbed off in the grass and can sometimes bite, although they dont live on us.
Keep an eye on it and if the centre doesnt heal,go back to doc....Used to work in dermatology so sorry about the photos!!!!

Another vote for lyme disease here. My son had this when a baby and the ring did change colour from red/purple to yellow/green.

How old is your son? Will he be able to let you know if he is feeling unwell?

he's 5 and so far seems fine...
