Flat feet and rolled in ankles / Pain in legs

dd has to attend Orthotics for insoles for her rolled in ankels and flat feet. She often complains that she has sore legs (mostly bak of leg behind the knee and ofter lower calf/and just above the ankle area). Does anyone else's child esp with FF and RA suffer from leg pain. Just wondering if this is normal. Mentioned this at last appt - they said it could be because she hadn't been wearing her insoles (had to wait ages for appt for fitting).

Both my dcs have pains in legs and other joints. In their case, flat feet are caused by Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, which also causes pain. But imagine flat feet on their own could well cause leg pain anyway.

It may be that wearing insoles would help on its own; it may also be that it needs to be supported by a programme of exercises.

My dcs have also had short hamstrings, which is another thing that causes leg pain (and is helped by physio).

Sounds like it could be worth having your dd checked out.

Thanks cory for your reply. I have always put the pains down to her inward ankles and flat feet but I have started 0to worry as she has had a few other little health issues recently and that's when my mind starts to wander and worry that there's a more sinister reason.

Hi my son has recently started using orthotic insoles for flat feet/rolling ankles. It took 6 months from first going to the GP (when I noticed he had started to "claw" his toes all the time when walking) to actually getting the insoles. During that time he started complaining about pain in his legs after exercise (on the inside of his legs just below the knee). He was waking in the night crying etc. Apparently this pain is down to the rolling ankles putting strain on the muscles further up the leg. Since he's had his insoles he hasn't complained of any pain - so all good so far.

Hope your DD's insoles will fix the problem for her.

Thanks spenthen that is reassuring, she didn't complain yesterday. I think it could be adjusting to her new insoles. She has gone without wearing them most of the suummer as she was mostly wearing sandals etc and insoles didn't really suit that kind of shoe. She also had to wait for longer for appt for her new ones this time so lets hope it's a case of re-adjusting. thanks

If there is an ongoing problem with joint pains, after insoles, it might be worth asking for an appointment to a rheumatologist. This doesn't have to mean that there is anything terribly sinister going on

I have orthotic insoles for flat feet and before I was allowed my permanent ones I had to do lots of stretching etc to undo what had happened to my muscles which were trying to support my dodgy feet! (DH has them too and had to do exercises for his ankles which had been damaged by running on unsupported flat feet)

It does take some time to get used to the insoles and our podiatrist was very insistent that I wear them for increasing lengths of time for the first couple of weeks, and not exercise in them until I'd been wearing them full time for a fortnight.

Can you show her how to gently stretch whichever muscles hurt? And if it carries on see if you can get referred to a pysio as it was a simple thing for DH and I to fix but it made a huge difference to us!

Have they any particular reason to believe it's fragile X rather than one of the Ehlers Danlos syndromes, Leonie? Hope you don't mind my asking. So many things that could cause hypermobility and flat feet.
