GP or A&E?? DS3 ran into the table just over an hour ago........

whacked his eye on it and screamed (A LOT).

Put some ice on it and it seemed ok, it's a bit red out around it (a tiny bit blood shot) but he was running around playing normally very soon afterwards

Fastforward to now.... He's fallen asleep in my arms and doesn't seem quite himself.

Think I should probably get him checked out as it's not like him to suddenly get clingy/whingy/fall asleep at this time of the day. But where do I take him - GP's or A&E?

GP won't touch anything that looks like a head injury, I don't think. I know minor injury clinics won't, anyway. A+E. He's probably fine, but it's worth checking.

A&E, take him now.

I'm sure he's probably fine, but it's always worth getting this sort of thing checked out.

I would ring the surgery in the first instance. If they can't help, then you could go to your local walk in centre. If you are really worried and he is unrousable, has unequal pupils, or vomiting you should go to A&E.

A & E - Did a First Aid course yeaterday and it is ALWAYS worth being checked over.

You can let him sleep but you must be able to raise him every ten mins.

In the distant past when DS1 and 2 at various points fell down the stairs (yes both on more than one occasion ) I just took them to the GP's. They had fat lips and were fine.

It's the fact that he's whacked his eye - and now an hour later on is sleepy that's worring me.

A&E I guess it is then

Yes A&E. I'm sure he'll be fine but it really is better safe than sorry.

arghh - having nightmare trying to sort childcare for DS1 and 2. GP's reception is open again in 8 minutes so I'm going to ring them and see what they say.

don't worry about childcare: get all of you over to A&E!

he's probably okay, but head injuries in children are really hit-and-miss so it's always safer to get him checked out.

well yes that sounds simple doesn't it - except it's going to take me an hour on the bus to get there and nearly £20 in fares.

It's not quite so simple as "just go there".

A & E, call an ambulance don't take a bus. You have a good reason to call an ambulance, it's not just for blood and guts. When dd fell down the stairs we called one, everyone was fine about calling one.

have you got any friends or neighbours who could take to A&E ?

It is probably just reaction that is making him sleepy but it is worth getting it checked - but I can see why the getting there makes it harder.

the'll be okay about it if you explain why they're there: they owuldn't make you leave them when it's classed as an emrgency.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Unfortunately you are going to need to get to A&E. Having had DS hurt both head and eye on various occassions do need hospital to check as may need eye specialist. GP will only refer you on and it will waste time. Can anyone give you a lift as it sounds like you're a bit of a distance away (or at £20 taxi could be cheaper).

off to GP's now - if they refer me on I'll just have to drag the DS's up with me, but if they send me home and tell me to keep an eye on him then we'll do that.

if you dont want to call an ambulance (you should but you may be hesitating to actually do it)

call nhs direct and they will call one for you

been to the GP's (and town afterwards).

I actually saw my GP - only the 2nd time in 7yrs that I've seen my named GP.

He checked him over, prodded and poked him, squirted dye in his eye to check that he hadn't scratched his eye, shone lights in his eyes (to which DS3 said "stop it GO AWAY".

No serious damage done, will have a lovely black eye in a day or two, got to watch for vomitting, etc etc but otherwise no problems.

he seems to be.......he's standing at the kitchen gate throwing a tantrum at DH because he's broken his biscuit and wants to have one to give to DS3
