Hard swelling on leg, and big red mark where DS (14m) had injections

He had his 13m injections, one is each leg. The (his) right leg is OK but the left has a big red mark around it, and is swollen and tender (he flinches) and the swelling is pretty hard and quite a big area, the whole of the side of his thigh rather than a pea size little bit. Is this normal? Do I need to see/ring anyone? Injections were yesterday, I only noticed this this evening. Thanks

Hi, is he otherwise ok? My son had teh exact same thing and it was really hot to touch so I called NHS direct who said to keep an eye on him and if it settled then not to worry. Sorry, probably not much help. As it happens his DID settle by the next morning and was fine.

37.2 in one ear, 37.3 in the other so seems fine

sounds like an injection abscess or the start of cellulitus. keep your eye on the red patch and if it gets bigger ,go to the doc

draw around the rash so you can see if it grows, and if it does - GP straight away.

I am sure it has grown , looked at it now and it looks bigger. i will draw on it now and see over the next few hours.

as Fabster says draw a line round it by putting cling film over it and using marker pen.then put the cling film back over it later to see if it has grown. If it seems to be tracking go to OOH doctors

This happened with my ds, it wasnt his mmr, it was the other one, in the other leg, sorry vague, my mum said it was just the medication, it went down after a couple of days, he had a temp and it was a hard large area and quite hot to touch.
If you are worried seek medical advice though to keep peace of mind

Waiting for a call back from out of hours GP (NHS direct massive queue). It is hot to touch, DH thinks it looks bigger so don't think there's much point to see if it gets bigger again - brilliant tip about the cling film, I will do that now incase it gets even bigger. Thankyou

Gp rung back, says it sounds normal but is checking somehting and calling back. What is tracking? Is that like the red lines you get with mastitis?

tracking is when an infection visibly follows the course of a vein or artery. It becomes dangerous if it gets from the arm to the shoulder or the leg to the main body. Dont want to alarm you. just be aware of it ,thats all. If he is feverish i wouldnt hesitate to call OOh doc or even A an E triage department.

NHS direct is no good in this situation imho. It needs looking at. Cellulitis can be serious. Both my sons have had it.

Fabster ...totally agree...DS2 had it this year after a mosi bite...ended up on 2 lots of ABx and then he was told he would have to go on iv ABx if it didnt clear up...was realy worried as his arm looked so angry.

MerryWifeOfWindsor hope its better this am?

Our next step with DS1 was iv ABs too but luckily we just avoided that. With DS2 I demanded ABs immediately.
