he was fine after, bouncing on the bed all afternoon dosed up from the supositry (sp?) and other pain killers they gave him there.

He was so good they sent us home last night instead of this morning.

he slept well overnight, had a good breakfast, but is now mouth breathing and trying not to swallow, I have given him the maximum dosgae of ibuprofen and calpol that he is allowed.

I guess my question is - is this normal? this is how I expected him to be yesterday but he was soooo well that this is a shock.

any tips?

I know someone who's ds got their tonsils out on Monday, they were advised to let him drink coke, helps clear everything apparently

but he will probably be tired today because of the anasthetic, and the medicine will take longer to kick in than the suppositry(sp)

he is sucking on an ice lolly at the moment... watching finding nemo..

no sure about giving coke.. he hasn't ever had fizzy (he is only 3)

Yeah not a fan of coke giving to children myself, but I just remembered BIL was advised this too, but hes 28,

My dd is nearly 3 and won't drink fizzy drinks either

Utterly normal! Post op painkillers are strong, and last a while...plus, swelling kicks in the first day post-op.

Tips: don't, whatever you do, stop the pain relief - keep giving calpol and nurofen (alternating, so he has something every few hours) bang on time, for the next few days/week. Much more effective if you give regularly and stay on top of the pain, iyswim.

Pain levels can go up and down, dd2 was only 2.5 and had a lot of pain all the way through - we gave her paracetamol supps and voltarol supps day and night for 10 days - but dd1's friend had his out the other day (he's 5) and was fairly ok till around day 6-7, when the pain got very intense for 2-3 days. This is because scabs are falling off around day 6-9, and is normal - as long as there's no bleeding or raised temp, its probably just the healing process and not an infection.

Nearly all kids are fine by day 10, if not before

Ice lollies are great, any 'rough' foods he will eat are the best (keep the wound clean, apparently - eg toast or crisps, was amazed to see dd accept crisps but not pasta!). He may go off milk (dd is a milk fiend but woudln't touch it for a few days, probably tasted funny or stung) and definitely avoid orange juice/acidic things. Also, avoid things that 'stick' to their throats, like mashed potato...unless he's asking for some and can cope with it, of course!

Hope he's better v soon.

ps personally, would avoid sugary drinks - they will sting! Cool water went down well, and at 3 ice cubes are an attraction to suck or in water...dd didn't eat for days, and was skinny as a spider, but as long as they are hydrated it doesn't matter.

he asked for a choclate biscuit after his ice lolly, then had a bowl of dry cheerios.
topped up with neurofen and he has gone for a nap (thankfully not having to do the school run today)

will just keep going - makes sense that the swelling will kick in for a bit.
