my dd 2 year old has temperature of 39.1c

She won't take calpol. We have held her down and managed to give her maybe a teaspoonful. It just started today with no other symptoms other than wanting to be cuddled. I don't know how I can get any medicine into her at this rate.. Any ideas please.???

Hi you need to strip her down to a light vest and nappy or knickers and get her cool, you can wrap her calfs in cold damp towels as this will cool her gradually and not shock her. Do Not put her in a cool bath- its too shocking. If you have got about 5ml into her the give it an hour and see if her temp begins to drop - if it continues to rise ring someone, ie gp / nhs direct.

strip her down to he nappy/knickers and get a fan circulating cool air around her, but not directlty at her. Dive her plenty of clear fluids (how old is she? How many mls of calpol does she need?)

I know its hard but try and not cuddle her because your not helping her cool down. Maybe sit next to her and just hold her hand.

Do you have a medicine syringe or will she take the medicine in a drink

Mine used to hate calpol but liked the Boots equivalent - worth trying a different brand; or kiddy ibuprofen?

Use tepid water not cold. It will evaporate too quickly if she is very hot.

If she drops off you should be able to get more calpol down her.

A teaspoonful is about 5ml and that's the recommended dosage, so wouldn't worry about that. Maybe try using a medicine syringe next time?

I'd try stroking rather than cuddling; now I have the same flu all I want is to be stroked as it soothes my aching body.

oh... Thank you for the messages. I have managed to get medicine down by mixing it with her favorite juice. And temperature is all down and lovely. Only thing is we were going to invite another family with two toddlers for lunch tomorrow and I think it's better we cancel so we don't give the cold to them... I'm feeling horrid with throat pain and headache and just light nausea but without temperature so it could be same thing but affecting us differently. She's been herself since she has cooled down and hopefully she's okay tomorrow. Thank you for the support.
