DD had her tonsils & adenoids out on Wedsnesday and is now refusing to eat..

She has had a couple of bowls of mushed up Weetabix and a fromage frais and that's basically it!! My mum is suggesting Complan, but don't they need to eat 'proper' food to help clean the wounds? Any suggestions. She's 9 btw.

They do yes - to slough off all the mucky bits that can cause an infection. Can you dose her up with painkillers before mealtimes, give it half an hour for them to kick in?

My 9 year old DD had her tonsils out in January. She did really well with eating for two days then didn't eat for about 4 days after that. She was drinking but being sick a lot as she was so hungry but would not eat in case she was sick and it hurt. It was a viscious circle. I stood behind her each time she was sick thinking her tonsil beds might open and we might have a mad dash to a&e. Luckily we didn't and she started eating again on the 4th day (nearly a week after having them out). She ended up on antibiotics as they go infected but has been fine ever since. So much better now they are gone.

Not much advice I know just wanted to let you know we got through it!

Yes, dd was throwing up a lot on the first day - due to the anesthetic - and I think she is scared to eat anything in case she throws it up again, and also because it is so painful to swallow. Just asked her if she wants anything for tea and she says she's not hungry!! She must be, she hasn't eaten anything substantial since Tuesday night!!

Its horrid isn't it? We went through coaxing, bribing, shouting, crying (me and her!). She ended up a very waxy pale colour, extremely tired and sickly and we told her she would end up back in hosp if she didn't eat. You could always try complan, milk shakes etc?

oh your poor dd , my ds had the same operation when he was 6 & he didn't eat or drink for 7days after his op , he ended up having to be put on a drip & being kept in hospital an extra few days ,
i think as long as she is drinking lots then don't push food on her just yet , see how she is tomorrow

Thanks all!! Glad to hear it is a common problem and not just dd playing up!! I said to her earlier today 'The doctor told you to go home and eat and drink normally remember?', to which she replied, 'I bet she's never had her tonsils out, she probably doesn't know what it feels like'!! She has had a pot of custard for tea, but still nothing 'scratchy' iyswim!!

When we were kids the advice was always to eat jelly and icecream after having toncils out.

Would she eat that?

Yoghurt? You could perhaps even puree some fruit into yoghurt.

I imagine that her throat is very sore and it must be uncomfortable for her to swallow.

So tbh I would just go with it for now. As long as she is drinking, I would get her to eat soft things where possible, yoghurt/icecream/custard/soup/perhaps porridge, scrambled/boiled egg?

as long as she's eating something I wouldn't be too bothered about what it is for the next couple of days, and her appetite will return soon enough.

bomper what pain relief have you got her on and how often is she taking it?
is she drinking?
advice now is to eat a normal diet as eating and drinking help with the pain the other thing to do is to get her to chew gum as this has been shown to help with the pain as well

howeve......my dd had both removed last year she was just 4, she was very quiet and didnt eat much for a few days afterwards, we got some of those large bottles of yoghurt drink (YOP) I think theyre called, strawberry and rasberry etc and and she drank those which I thought was better than nothing, smooth but lots of fruit and calcium atleast, more like a milk shake. as long as nothing too citrusy as it might sting. She was absolutely fine after about a week and ate lots of scrambled egg too

She is on Calpol, Ibruprofen, antibiotics and they also gave her a throat spray to numb her throat. I am giving four hourly. She has now said that her tummy is hungry but she is too scared to eat!! Bless. I had a perfectly happy, healthy child Wednesday morning (albeit with massive scarred tonsils and huge adenoids!!) and now she is listless and in pain. Tell me I have done the right thing!!

yes you have definitely done the right thing & i asked myself that same question when ds had his out , my ds was having throat infection & high temps for two years solid as my gp kept saying he might grow out of them & in the end my ds started to choke on solid food as by then he only had a tiny gap between tonsils to swallow & gp rushed him into hospital as an emergency , the day i begged them to let my ds home the surgeon & a nurse sat on my ds bed & gave my ds a bowl of cornflakes & said if he eats four spoonfuls he can go home well my heart broke watching ds trying to eat but that was day 7 after his operation & all the other kids on the ward that had their op the same day as my ds had gone home .
give your lo a few days & if i where you i would keep giving her soft food as its better than nothing , my ds hasn't had a throat infection in 3 years now.

bomper you have done the right thing
it sounds as though you are on top of the pain just get her to drink if you can
will she drink milkshake or anything?
if she is fit and well a few days without food will be fine

i have to take dd2 (5yrs) to see a consutant in a couple of weeks about having her tonsils out. medicaly she is fine no thrpat infections or illness because of them but they are huge and severely affect her sleep

We had Sausages and Mash for lunch (well I had Weight Watchers ones whilst everyone else had yummy Porkinsons ones ) and she sooooooooooo wanted some. I gave her one sausage and a scoop of mash, but she could only manage the mash and even that after a ton of coaxing. Just made her a Complan drink, at least she'll be getting some goodness from that.

Cyradis - I can remember that feeling when I had really bad tonsilits, every swallow felt like broken glass down your throat!!

my ds (Age 6) has had them removed (day 6 today), as his were too large and affecting this breathing. he is suffering so much and not eating. He has lost weight. Am worrying about the bleeding aspect especailly as he is a red head (rule of thumb is that they tend to have a "bleeding tendancy...... aparently). Think it worse cos he didnt suffer with them previously so havent that excuse to fall back on!!

i know this is an old thread but i searched looking for help so thought would just update.

at approx day 9 we had a break through and he started eating well again. He is now day 13 and back to normal - still sore but he can cope with it. BIG RELIEF!!
