please can I have some soothing words.....DS2 has to have a GA tomorrow to have some teeth removed, am scared.....

....he has some genetics issues with teeth, (runs thru the family.....I had the same as did his brother), and his baby teeth came thru with no enamel (sp?).....5 need removing.

luckily so far his adult teeth seem fine, but he is only 6, first time for him being under as GA, and altho DH says he will be fine, I am quaking and getting tense.

hand holding would be lovely, soothing words even better....

Not pleasant - I had some teeth out when I was fairly young. Be prepared for him being sick afterwards. But you get over it pretty quickly (that is, your DS will. You too probably!)

DS had this and for same reason - he had 4 out and one capped - of course you're wobbling, only natural .. it will be fine. He'll have 24 hours of being not himself then fine.

This is what you need

1 clean shirt just in case he gets blood on his
a cold drink
a DS or something for the wait beforehand
soft food because he won't be allowed to eat before but may want to eat afterwards but can't due to sore mouth (lack of mouth control) - I recommend something like soft melon if he likes fruit anything he doesn't have to chew but not yogurt because it can make him vomit.
a sandwich for you and a drink
something to keep you occupied whilst he's under
someone to bring you both home afterwards (line them up in advance)

Warning during the op they can swallow blood - do not freak if he vomits blood afterwards particularly if he has a sensitive stomach it's just what they've swallowed.

If he believes in the tooth fairy take money for the teeth - we told DS he got more per tooth.

Gosh, another thing in your life that I can relate to! DD had 4 teeth removed, when she was about 10, I think, maybe 9. Same reason too! She was out for about 20mins and we were back out of Guys Hosp within the hour! She was fab, more fab than me tbh! No side effects and was as right as rain by teatime.

Mine had two out just after Christmas under GA. He coped very well with the whole preparation and had no idea that the needle had gone in! The numbing cream they use is very good.

I was unprepared for how quickly they wake up the children. They insert a pessary of pain relief whilst the child is asleep but that hadn't had enough time to be absorbed. He woke up in a lot of pain and a nurse hurried to give him a tiny codeine tablet. She did say that it was extremely unusual for the child to feel so much pain. The tablet took just 5 mins to work but it was a l.o.n.g. 5 minutes.

Do tell your child afterwards that he might 'do a funny poo'. I didn't and my son was a bit perturbed when he saw the remains of the pessary. Anyway, a few days of jelly and fromage frais and he was as right as rain. He only asked for calpol for two days and slept through the night straight away.

Good luck, it's horrible waiting but they fly through it.

good luck to your DS2 and you aswell.

my DD had to have a tooth removed with GA last year - she was only 3 yo and had developed an abcess (from a fall with her dummy when 18mo) but your brave boy doing 5 in one go.

TBH the hospital were brilliant and DD was really good,no sickness & only a little bleeding from the space and no pain.

unfortunately it doesnt encourage the adult tooth to come through any quicker, so DD still has lovely gap at the front.

just remind him that you will be there to hold his hand and can be brave together!!

oooh, thankyou all so much.

right, DS we have, and his ipod....clean clothes are easy (they said PJs or similar for him as they are soft).

DH si coming with us, so getting home is fine

I will take a book, altho that said, probably won't concentrate!! DH will be fine....he will take a paper no doubt, like when I was in labour

he is a fruit-fiend, so fruit will be easy. I will make some jelly tonight ready for tomorrow when he gets home.

lets hope he is as easy as maureens DD

oh, will prep him on the pessary poo if needs be, altho he has a bowel disorder so odd poo is not a scary thing for him.

We bought DD a bike, but mainly because she'd grown out of her old one, it was Easter and her birthday is in a winter month!

Cheeky monkey, tried to tell me she was putting her 4 teeth under the pillow for a big windfall! I pointed out that since she knew there was no tooth fairy and she'd just had a bike, she could dream on!

we have pressies lined up. I got four....a ben 10 book, some stickers, a colouring book with pens and a 'wheres wally' book too.....figured it would cover all eventuallities of wanting to do stuff

tis his birthday in 4wks, so big pressies will wait for then anyway.

sadly in this house the tooth fairy has a very very shoddy memory......only DD1 and DD2 got visits!

DD3 still leaves notes on the front door begging the tooth fairy to call in for the many teeth in their pots......

maybe the tooth fairy can come to all of them next week, depending on how flush my bank balance is......

am trying to remember I am wondering now whether I gave DS fruit despite the nurse - I know I'd made him a soft tuna sandwich which was pointless as he couldn't chew the bread .. maybe take a soft banana and not an acidic fruit? .. am sure they said no yogurt but jelly a good idea I think

DS4 had this, he is 13 and so well able to be prepared, but it confirmed previous exp that there is something quite wierd and horrible about seeing your child 'go under', not like just falling asleep at all.
So, I would say it's you that needs support more than him!
I never fail to be impressed by children's nurses, and the way the wards are organised. I think boredam will be the main issue (for both of you).
Main issue for us was post op care, I wasn't prepared for the hugeness of the swelling, so make sure you get it all described very clearly, what is and isn't normal. But his were adult teeth, growing sideways so I think they had to dig quite deep!

DS1 (10) had 4 out in April as part of his orthodontic work. He had them done under local (brave boy). He was a star. Sailed through it, no pain beyond what nurofen & calpol could deal with. He had to eat mushy food for a while (they were baby molars) and still has occasional problems chewing stuff because the adult ones haven't come through yet and there's nothing there to chew on

oh god yes, there will be a long time before he gets his new teeth wont it.

must remember to get calpol in for when he comes home...

i discovered that DS1 likes the apple & mango Ella's Kitchen baby food pouches.

I resisted the temptation to send him in with a pouch of pureed fish pie with his packed lunch the next day

He was fabulous though, I was (and still am) very proud of him. Obviously there was no GA to recover from but, TBH, the removal of the teeth caused him no trouble whatsoever.

my DD was back at nursery the next day after having GA. wasnt going to take her originally but she was so well and wanted to show her friends how brave she'd been.

A scarier time for you I bet than him. My DS had a GA at 20 months - for another reason - but was absolutely fine. He was a little upset coming around but the little ones usually are - the ones who were around 5 or 6 just seemed to ping awake lol.

Literally half an hour later he suddenly wriggled away from me, jumped off the bed and ran away to find a nurse - he apparently wanted lunch!!! Bearing in mind the op had been several hours and he had lots of stitches in his penis but there you go...

Children are so resilient. I also coped a lot better than I thought I would. The build up to it was much worse than the actual thing - once he had gone down I was bizarrely fine and went to the cafe, ate a huge fry up and did a sudoku . Bearing in mind I had severe morning sickness at the time and until then had been being sick 10 times plus a day it was rather a strange experience lol. Anyway what I am trying to say is that it is a lot better once it is happening and then after you can get on with looking after him rather than worrying about it all.

ooh, aristo, you were brave letting her. I am planning him home all week!! (am hoping that is not the case now tho...)

soupy, I might well go get some of the pureed fruit pouches. kept cold in the fridge will be excellent for soothingness too.

peppapig, would be a nice thought if I am able to go eat while he is under. I have done GA's with my others tho......I know how sick I feel!!

this is his first time tho, and he is my 'baby' (ie, youngest).....feels worse IYGWIM.

What's good about the pouches is that they can squirt them in, thus avoiding most of the sore places. Same for Frubes.

Not teeth, but ds had a GA fairly recently. It's very unpleasant watching them go to sleep, though I have to say the anaesthetist was amazing, and managed to do it without a big scary gas mask until ds was basically asleep. Be prepared to cry after he's put under - the lovely nurse told me everyone cries. But ds was fine and running around about 3 hours later - insanely grumpy on coming round, but totally back to normal soon after. Good luck.

just running in to say a mahoosive thankyou for the soothing words yesterday

he is fine, home now, had a scary hour as he did NOT come round properly, but he has been newly (as in last wednesday!! DXd as hasing sensory processing disorder, and apparently I should have said as it can have repercussion on them dealing with pain and GA....((feel guilty as had no idea))....but once I said about it (while he was really having issues with coming back), so their focus changed, plus their attitude, and all was calmer.....we were put into a separate room and had a nurse with us the entire time.

anyhoo......he is now in bed with a new DVD, new colouring bits, and jelly....he is fine.

I have some wine
