lump in baby boy groin

ds had a temp last couple of days nothing major but his first one (he's nine months) so i rang nhs direct etc. they asked allthe usual questions including does he have a lump in his groin? at the time couldnt find one. temp gone down but was just changing nappy and noticed a lump at the top of the pubic triangle, just below acually couldn't find a matchingone on other side. why did they ask this? what is it? should I worry about it?
A&E?
NSH DIREct again?
doc appt emergency or non?
or is it just a gland?

ta will also google but expect to be worried by the outcome!

I'd pop him to the GP. It is an odd place to have an enlarged gland but it's not unheard of, especially as he's had a bit of a fever but it's best to get it looked at. It is a gland by the way, they are everywhere.

I would get it checked. The glands in the groin are not normally the ones that become enlarged. How big is it? Has it grown? How's he in himself? Grumpy? Happy? Feeding/eating?

he's recovering from temp during which he was quite grumpy so last bit of high temp was midnight and was up most of the night. he's having a kip at the moment but otherwise is happy but clingy. the lump was on the right side and when i pressed it he weed all over me. it's not at all big but can feel it.

forgot to say he used to have an undescended testes is in the same place...

Nice. So he had a full bladder then! I'd get the GP to have a look at it as it isn't in the normal place for an enlarged gland following an illness. I wouldn't worry too much though, everyone's different and this could just be normal for him, I'd still get it checked though. Call the GP now, it's not urgent but it is Friday afternoon and it's not nice for you to spend the weekend worrying. If you can't get an appointment keep an eye on it. If it gets bigger then I'd be inclined to get him seen by the out of hours and see what they say.

thanks a lot. have just booked an appointment for me for monday as can't stop weeing. i am not at all worried abouthim and and just want to ensure that's ok (not to worry i mean). called nhs direct who will call me back today. my surgery is quite difficult to get emerg stuff with and would almost prefer walk in emergency over weekend so when spk to nhs direct will then decide if need to go to walk in over weekend. as he's been asleep last hour am now doubting it is even there!

feel like i live in the gps.

You can get enlarged glands there quite commonly - esp if non specific illess. you can also get them from the smallest things - eg scratch on leg. They can be all over the body. However needs checking out as he may have an infection further down his leg, or something else causing it.

when i got him up for sch run, had a quick check and couldn't find anything. could it have been the wee???? am i just so sleep deprived i am hallucinating? wil have another feel at bathtime/next change

It's doubtful to have been wee. Has he been eating peas? The child I used to care for would get a little lump on her tummy when she'd eaten a pea. Very odd!

Maybe it's gone down?

Hi Manitz,

Sounds like a hernia to me. Don't worry!!! If it is it's very straightforward. Your ds's symptoms are exactly as my ds's were when he was a baby. I'd defo get that looked at. If it gets bigger, or looks a bruised colour, go to docs asap.

yeh it could well be a hernia.

keep an eye on it, and if you find it again (more prominent when standing up, coughing etc) then see GP.

if he develops abdo pain (ok he won't tell you if hes got tummy pain - but if he seems in pain), becomes unwell, or vomits the straight to doc and mention it.

but its gone away. you can't see it and couldnt even when it was there. the bit his willy comes out of (the pubic triangle) has recently become more plump - read that's normal. was feeling around and could feel it within the fatty bit. now it seems to have gone. no more temperature but he has got diarrhea so not entirely well but so so much better than the last two days very giggly so doesn't appear to be in pain.

Hi Manitz,

If it is a hernia it will sometimes show and sometimes not. A hernia is where the lining of the stomach has a weak spot. Like a loose muscle. Maybe I'm wrong but all the symptoms you describe are the same as my baby ds had.

It can't hurt to mention it when you see the gp imo. Hernias don't always cause any pain at first so I would be on the safe side and tell the gp to check it out. Up to you, obviously
