My poor 4 year old daughter was admitted to hospital today with pneumonia. She's on antibiotics and oxygen. One lung is not working at all at the moment. My partner, her dad is with her and will be staying with her, but I have to stay at home with the baby and I feel quite upset that I can't be with her.

Does anyone have experience of severe pneumonia and how children recuperate from it. She is usually such a hardy girl who, apart from her asthma, is never ill.

Complaining is good! It means she is fighting and you want a girl who doesn't accept the illness. As opposed to a very ill child who is accepting...

Poor thing -- she knows though that the people in hospital are helping her get better. Being 4 years old, she knows that she is there because she isn't well.

Don't feel too bad. Sounds as if she is through the worst and will be home soon!

hope shes better soon

Thanks everyone for the replies. It's lovely to have somewhere to talk about it as I feel quite alone at home. My family lives in Sweden and my fil is very very ill with terminal cancer so mil and sil can of course not help out since they are dealing with fil.

When I saw her today she was in the playroom having a great time. She is looking so much better. Her protein levels are really low though so she's having lots of protein drinks. She can stay off the drip now as long as she drinks plenty which is great. We've been told that she'll most likely need to stay for a week or so more though which seems like an eternity.

Glad she is doing well

Mine had straws and a sticker chart - a sticker for each slurp of a drink

The sticker chart is a nice idea. She at least seems to quite like the shakes, she has ones with strawberry flavour.

aw sassy hope she will be ok .
my dd had pneumonia when she was 7 and for a week we thought she had a tummy bug ,raging temp and vomitting ,no cough no cold ,she was very weak .
at the hospital they did a chest x -ray and found what was really was ,so upset full of guilt never did we think for one second that what it could of been .
she was put on ab's and in 24 hrs had improved so much they let her home with oral antibiotics.
hugs for all ur family

I know what you mean about the guilt candyfluff. The day before she went into hospital I thought she was being whiny and made her walk to the shops with me =( I feel really bad about it now.

Good news is ... she is coming home tomorrow. She's improved lots and can take the rest of her antibiotics at home. She'll have to come back for scans and another chest x-ray and check ups later though, but I'm glad they will follow up.
