Sickness and diahroea in 18 month old - when to really worry?

Tummy bug doing to rounds. 10 year old DD1 was sick last night and has tummy ache today, but otherwise is fine.

DD2 18month has had nasty nappies for four days now and has been off her food, but drinking loads of milk. So I have not worried.

But she was very sick in the night (once), and threw her milk straight back up this am. Her nappies have got really watery. She's done about three so far today.

Rang HV, who seemed fairly chilled about the whole thing. Said to lay off the milk, give her water or diluted juice, and if she refuses that, to go on to Dioralyte.

Baby has now dosed off. Has anyone else had this. What am I looking out for? This is third night w/o sleep and I am not trusting my own judgement any more.

Agree with HV - avoid any dairy at all, try to give her potatoes and bland food like dry toast. Try a lttle at a time until you are confident she is keeping it down.
She should be fine. My ds was in hospital at 8 months for a bad bug, but only because he was refusing fluids - luckily he managed few sips of water every hour - which is what they suggested.
With regards to dioralyte - it is so revolting that my ds would not take it alone - I ended up mixing it with formula, despite the no milk warning - but at least he took something.
Perhaps make the dioralyte up and pour some into a cup half way and then top up with something you know she will drink like juice?

Thank you blondissimo - the no dairy worked a treat. No more sickness and the rate of dirty nappies has slowed considerably. Water and eventually vimto did the trick and she is now walking around, as bright as anything.

Only problem now is, that at one point during last night, she poo'd and was sick in our bed. I remember I stripped the bed, but cannot for the life of me remember what I did with the soiled sheets. I've searched the house. I haven't checked two places - the outdoor bin (here's hoping) or the clean bedding box (please no.)

Oh dear! The joys of kids! I'm sure you will find them soon once the smell starts festering!

Glad I found this thread. DD (17 months) has been vomiting since Friday and isn't keeping anything at all down. Her nappies have been nasty as well and it's beginning to really worry me - this is the first bug she's had so unsure of what to do here. She will ordinarily drink water but won't at the moment as she is asking for milk as it's a comforter for her. But obviously that's not helping as she brings it straight back up but it's all she wants.

I'm guessing it's water and diluted juice and dry toast etc, no dairy but at what point do I take her to the doc? I know she can't go to nursery on Tuesday as it's 48 hours clear isn't it?

Doctors will always see a sick child, if you're worried.

The ice cream test works for my dd - if they say yes please, they're probably ok.

But, seriously, the GP will look to see if their tongue and mouth is wet, and if they're alert (shouting is A Good Sign) and active. Dioralyte contains 6 spoons on sugar and half a spoon of salt in a litre of water - it tastes fairly vile if you make it yourself but you can add some juice or whatever, or as above, add the above to formula.

As with regards to nursery, most nurseries do have a strict policy that children are not allowed to return until 48 hours after there last bought of sickness of diahorrea, however if you do return you child after these 48 hours and they do still seem under the weather, my nursery will observe them if they see no improvement, they will be sent home

Thanks. She's absolutely fine in herself, very chirpy. I tried ice cream yesterday and she had a little bit but but her usual ganet self! OK, will try not to worry and will proceed with diluted juice and dry toast rations and see how we go.

I can't wait till she's old enough to tell me how she feels...

Sounds like she is doing ok for now and will beat it but I will check back for how she (and you) gets on.
