That child with the awful green snotty nose.... it's my ds2!

And he's 8!
He always has a disgusting nose...every day of the year..
It really is vomit worthy. I'm constantly getting him to blow his nose, his pockets are stuffed with tissue,he wipes all the time, but that green river is still there...
and then to make it worse, he licks as well so it's green and bright red!
Is there a possible medical reason for it?
He is in perfect health in every other way, is only ill once every couple of years....
What can I do? Cos if it's making me gag, God knows what other people think.

Could it be an allergy ie dust mite or pets?
Just snotty or sneezing too?

It could be an allergy, we have lots of animals and live in farmland, sheep, cows, rape, so I don't think there is much I can do about that.

Have you tried giving piriton or some other hayfever type medicine to see if that helps? I guess that might show if it is an allergy. But i don't really know. Worth a try i think.

Green = bacteria.

He needs a swab taken and investigation for chronic sinusitis. He may have allergies with a superimposed bacterial infection. He may have a problem with adenoids or tonsils. He must be very uncomfortable.

My friend's twin girls are like this if they have dairy. I know you can't do much about the external potential allergens but you could look into his diet. And I agree with 3littlefrogs that you should also talk to your GP.

I agree get a swab taken. There is also a possibility that maybe he shoved something up there ages ago and it is still tere and infected!

my friends daughter is like this she kept taking her to the docs and they kept saying just a cold she will grow out of it.

However she decided to go back tougher and demand an investigation be done it turns out there is a problem with something inside the nasal area ( sorry i can not remember exactly what she told me)

Her daughter needs a simple operation to fix this problem, my friend is very relieved as she knew it was not normal and now finaly her dd will not be the one with the yucky nose.xx

There was a little girl at school with me who had a yukky nose. Poor little soul, she was very isolated because no-one wanted to play with her.

Do take him to the doctor.

I am going to take him to the doctor because his friends have started to notice it.. It is grim!
I don't think there is anything stuck up there as it's both nostrils but not at the same time and it has been since he was a tiny tot. I thought it was just because he couldn't blow his nose, he's only learnt how to do that recently.
It doesn't seem to make him uncomfortable at all, he doesn't even notice it unless it's red and cracked but that has improved as I slap vaseline on every day.

One of my DSs was like this, he is on daily Citirizine (sp) on prescription now, and has no more snot!

Quick update
well I took ds2 to the GP today. He is actually the father of a boy we know and mentioned he'd noticed ds2's nose before!
Anyway, he thinks it's perennial rhinitis so we now have cetirizine and flixonase to try...

Oh I am glad - hope the medication works.

That's good. Hope the medication gives him some relief from snot!
