DD 3.9 Woken this morning with red face and body....is this delayed sunburn?

We were out in the sun a lot yesterday, but she was covered up in the morning, with cream on her face, and in the afternoon she played in my sis' paddling pool with her cousins from about 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

She had factor 15 on for about half an hour until I could find my factor 50, then factor 50 on for the rest of the time.

She was a bit pink cheeked near the end, but I just put it down to the heat as she had hat and factor 50 on.

She has woken up this morning with a really quite red face and arms, torso etc. Not legs. It's curious as it's not in the shape of her swimming costume - no strap marks etc and in places looks more speckled than block colour.

Is this sunburn, or could it be a heat/allergy to the sun reaction? I'm confused as I'm normally so careful in the sun and she's survived 2 holidays in Florida in her little life where we spent lots more time in much stronger heat and sunshine and it never bothered her at all.

She's a bit itchy, but not personally in any great discomfort and she slept well.

Has she got any other symptoms? Measles is going round in our area at the moment and i know thatt is a red rash on face arms and upper torso, not wanting to worry as do not have any medical knowledge but just to make you aware if you are living north east area x

sounds like slapped cheek, has she been a bit grotty last couple of days, like she has a bit of a cold? Saying anything is achey? Its not very serious (except to pregnant women) and is very common, most adults have had it as children without realising. They call it a 'lacey rash'. Will try to find link

Hmm, I don't think it's that, she had scarlet fever only a couple of weeks ago and had 10 days of antibiotics so I wouldn't have thought she could catch something like that so easily.

I think it's sun related - she says she itchy but other than that is on top form, eating and drinking well.

We tried to avoid the sun this afternoon as it was scorching by us but whenever we were in it, it seemed to bother her more .

We've slapped on the aftersun and hopefully it will have calmed down tomorrow. If not, will take her to docs.

You said you put on your factor 15...is it a different sort to what she normally has on?

My little boy had a funny reaction to suncream last summer and came out in a pink itchy rash after we had used one which he had actually used before...no idea why though! We actually tried it again cause thought it might have just been coincidence but he came out in a rash again pretty much how you described!

Im probably completely wrong but worth a thought...incidently the only suncream we can actually use on him now is Bergaderm because all other suncreams Ive tried have brought him out in exactly the same rash!! Its all very strange cause he's nearly 4.5 and we've used suncream on him since he was tiny with no effects so a bit weird that it happened now!

That's really interesting norfolklass - you're right. This is the first time she hasn't had a specific kids high factor sun screen on. She's also never had any issues before. DS didn't have any reaction and was in the sun only half an hour less than her - and he only had his swim shorts on. By the time he was up from his nap I'd found my factor 50 so that's all he ever had on.

Well, you may be right. Worth considering anyway - will make sure I don't make that mistake again.

Just thought it might be a possibility cause it sounded exactly how my ds came up as well. We'd only been in the sun about 45 mins and the next morning he was literally covered in this pink rash which looked very similiar to sunburn.

He never normally burns at all so couldn't quite figure why he'd got so burnt after such a short time...exactly like your dd!

I agree, could well be the suncream, one of my dcs (who has eczema/sensitive skin) is the same, it's an issue every year, have to cover up rather than apply cream.

poor DD. She was itching like crazy last night.

we have decided to junk all the old stuff anyway as god knows if it's a year or 3 years old and just buy new, special child block for her and DS.

She had eczema as a baby and although it's pretty much gone now, she is still prone to occasional dry patches and her hands flared up badly when she became a bit obessed with a new character pump hand soap we bought and kept execessively using it.

DH also remembers having an allergic reaciton like this to some sun cream about 3 years ago so you're probably right.

After my ds had his funny reaction to the suncream last year I was recommended Bergaderm mousse so we tried some and its amazing-can't recommend it highly enough.

Its quite pricey (about £14) but it lasts ages and is a mousse so when you put it on it doesn't feel all sticky/gunky on your skin in fact it doesn't seem like you've got any on at all. The highest spf it comes in is 30 but we found that was high enough last year...don't know about this summer lol!

Hello DHW!!! Oh god, she looks a proper sight! I'm so glad it's half term otherwise I don't think I could cope with shame of sending her to nursery like that lol - everyone will think i'm one of those mothers who can't slap on a bit of sun cream fgs!

We managed to get some medised down her neck last night (she detests it) as it has antihistamine in it, and DH has gone out this morning for Piriton syrup.

It's definitely prickly heat and or combo of suncream reaction. She's scratching constantly poor poppet. Also, we went out yesterday thinking it was going to be a cooler day and of course it ending up boiling hot again so she was highly aggravated in the car on the way home from Windsor (we went to the great park - it was fab, have you been?)

Hopefully, whatever it is, will clear up quickley with the cooler weather.

My two are making mud pies in the garden. Actually, they are calling it 'potion' . I don't think there will be much soil left in my pots by the end of the day.

Dd was walking in it with bare feet when I last looked. Luckily I caught her before she then tried to walk back into the sitting room with her muddy feet on a mision for more water.

I wish I had sorted out her sand pit now . Sands seems as though it would have been so much cleaner

Ah yes, but the sand gets feckin' everywhere!

At the end of a day playing down the pit the DC's will inevitably jump into our bed at some point, wriggle around, deposit bits of sand from their socks and god knows where else then disppear again, leaving us to exfoliate all night...

I ended up having to carry them from the garden into the kitchen and washed their feet in the sink.

Apparently, they took their shoes off because they didn't want to get them dirty

Don't wanna throw too many irons in your fire but DS2 has just had a possible streptococcal infection which turned into a rash all over which the GP said might or might not have ended up as Scarlet Fever.

Did she have sore throat lately at all? The rash came a while after the sore throat in my DS. He's now on some serious ABs as a precaution. Interestingly we all went down with horrible, debilitating throat/glands stuff at the same time - I had assumed it was a virus but probably not says GP.

Rash was pretty speckled - very much like prickly hear - gradually joined up like sunburn, all over but worse on torso, arms and legs, but with bright red, patchy flushed face also.

Lupusina- Sycamoreseedling had scarlet fever a few weeks ago and was all recovered from that.

Oh, just caught up on this old thread - that is quite wierd lupus...as DHW said, she just finished her 10 days ab's for scarlett fever right after easter. But thanks for posting, it would have been helpful when I posted this thread lol!
