he's had one before, in exactly the same place, (strangely, on his ear) and it was a total nightmare as it was wrongly diagnosed and we were given all sorts of treatment that didn't work/made it worse. it developed impetigo on top of it and it took forever for them to diagnose what was going on. in all we had a month of misery during which it got all gungy and very very painful for him.
now, more than a year later, the cold sore is back, but as he is nearly two, i'm wondering if there's anything we can get for it over-the-counter or are we doomed to hours in the GP surgery again?

I am not a health professional, so i am only telling you my own experience and not advising what you should do!

My son gets a coldsore on the same spot under his lip / on his chin, every couple of months. Impetigo was ruled out as its always in the same spot, although he sometimes gets impetigo on it as well, like your DS.

At night i put Metamium nappy cream on it (the yellow stuff) as that keeps it dry and helps loads with the impetigo, and then in the morning i will put Zovirax on it in a TINY amount and only 2 mornings running, as you aren't supposed to use it on kids (my DS is 6).

But it works! So shoot me.

Like i said, i am not giving you advice on what to do, merely saying what i do!
