vision going like "scratched DVD jumping"

DS2 has informed me that his eyesight keeps going funny "like the jerky bits when you play a scratched DVD". He is 8 and has a social and communication disorder so sometimes explains things in an idiosyncratic manner but has had his eyes checked recently and they seemed OK. Does anyone know what this could be?

i would get this assessed by opthamologist/eye specialist asap.

better to be cautious.

Agree with blinks. Has he described when this happens? Is it at random times or when he's reading?

wigglybeezer · 10/05/2009 23:01

He has had a full check up with an optometrist a few weeks ago, I am actually more concerned that it might be something neurological. I'll take him to the GP and ask for him to be refered.

is there an eye hospital in your area?

wigglybeezer · 10/05/2009 23:43

There is an eye department in the local general hospital but I would need to be referred by the GP, I have an appointment with the "nice" GP on wednesday about something else and will ask then. It has happened 3 or 4 times recently, the eye check up he has had was just to check him for normal vision problems (I am very shortsighted so get the kids checked regularly) but was very thorough ie, not just reading a letter chart.

migraine?

that's the first thing i thought when i read the title tbh, the aura before a migraine can affect vision weirdly, some people suffer pain free migraines where they experiance the visual symptoms and assosiated symptoms but not the actual headache.

KingCanuteIAm · 10/05/2009 23:52

It sounds, to me, like the effect when I get a twitch in my eye. Usually because I am overtired/stressed. It is like the eyelid and muscle around the eye twitching making the vision jump. Sometimes it is a one off twitch every so often, others it is like a series of them like the muscle is in spasm.

I have a feeling it has been called a sty, but I thought a sty was a little lump in your eye so that is probably wrong.

maybe call GP practise tomorrow and ask for telephone consultation to see if they can arrange something before that.

they normally take visual disturbances quite seriously even if it may be a simple migraine.

That was weird blinks, 2 posts 3 mins apart - are you in the twighlight zone?

Op, I agree with blinks, best to get it checked out, I am funny about eyes - the potential for things to go wrong seems to be large (IMparanoidO)!

PinkTulips · 11/05/2009 00:17

oooh how weirdy woo.

i wasn't even drunk...

Ceolas · 11/05/2009 09:07

Any visual disturbance is best checked by the GP. I'd take him.

wigglybeezer · 11/05/2009 11:34

I think it is possibly a migraine aura too as quite a few people in the family have migraines, I am the daughter of a GP and was brought up listening to my Dad (who was very conscientious) moaning about patients, it makes me a bit conservative about taking the kids down with every minor thing BUT i will take him about this.
