34 weeks pregnant and her DD has chickenpox, is it something to be concerned about?

I'm sure her GP has advised but was quite surprised to get a text from a friend laughing that she will have to keep her legs crossed for a while.

Is the risk very low at this stage?

I know my SIL had been exposed to CP when her DD was born and there were some real concerns for the baby's health for a while so I guess it could be a risk if she went into early labour.

If she hasn't had chicken pox she needs to be immunised I think - my friend went through this and I am sad to say a friend of hers has a daughter who had chicken pox (I think from what my friend says) in utero (sp?) and she has lots of issues with reagrds to development both mentally and physically.

if she has had chicken pox already then she (and the baby) should be ok. It is a risk if the baby was born just now as it could be dangerous in a newborn.

The dangerous periods appear to be in the first 20 weeks and after week 37 of the pregnancy.

If she's already had chicken pox (which she probably has), and doesn't have the baby in the next week or so, there shouldn't be a risk (actually, even if she did have the baby in the next week or so they'd just need to keep it away from her DD. Also assuming that there isn't another household member who hasn't haschicken pox who could catch it and be contagious in several weeks' time.

Thanks, I'm calling her later so will try and advise. (if she needs it)
