5 week old baby not done a poo for 6 days. is this normal/OK?

the last time he did a poo was 6 days ago, and 6 days before that too. Previous to that it was daily. He's feeding well, putting on lots of weight and doing a lot of wees. He farts like a stinky old tramp, and does seem to have the occasional struggle with farts and sore tummy.

He is breastfed

IMO, yes it is. With my DD this started at around 6 or 7 weeks. As long as the poos aren't hard (hers were a lot like peanut butter (sorry if TMI)) and the baby seems comfortable in general I think it is ok.
Breastmilk is just such ideal food that there is very little waste.

I was once told that if there was a problem with a baby's guts it would normally show itself within the first few weeks, so after that it is probably just the breastmilk/little waste thing.

When my DDs were in NICU/SCBU the longest they would leave it before intervention (glycerine suppository) was 5 days. But obviously that is a very different setting and may not be relevant to a full term healthy baby.

FearOfThePig · 06/05/2009 18:09

x post. thank you mrshappy
no such thing as tmi when it comes to baby poo imo.
poo normal cosistency, perhaps little less grainy, and bit more slimey. yum

My bf ds {3 months) only poos every 4-5 days as standard. Have told heslth professionals and none were remotely concerned - apparently is v normal for bf baby. Only an issue if the poo deos not look normal when it comes out or if he shows pain.

IWantedThatName · 06/05/2009 18:11

Like I say - that was in a child that is being cared for in a medical setting so obviously isn't healthy IYSWIM.

I would drop a call to your HV if anything.

FearOfThePig · 06/05/2009 18:13

yes, good idea, will do thanks.

I asked my HV about this today - my dd is 8 weeks tomorrow and goes 3-4 days and was told the same as the others here have said - in breastmilk there is so little waste they don't need to poo it out. SO if it looks normal, its fine.

donnymouse · 06/05/2009 19:32

I would not worry at all unless your baby is in pain.

Fully breastfed babys do not get constipated, the milk is so perfect for them that it is used up and it takes quite a while for some babies to build up enough to do a bowel movement.

My fully breastfed baby, used to go every 10 days and once went up to two weeks. I have spoken to lots and lots of fully BF babies and they all have very similar experiences.

5 weeks is about the time that it happens when they start going longer between poops if they are going to go that way.

Please, please, do not give your baby anything to bring a poop on, dont give it orange juice or prune juice. If you feel inclinned to do something move the babies legs in a bycicle type of motion, or rub the lower tummy gently.

If there is no pain, and the tummy is soft I would not worry.

If you baby has a hard bloated tummy and is crying in pain by all means see a doctor.

Just remeber is is very common in BF babies.

LOL - mums of BF babies

LadyOfWaffle · 06/05/2009 19:36

I thought wee was only an indication of enough foremilk - poo - hindmilk. Does he have long feeds from 1 breast? IMO I'd get him checked out

FearOfThePig · 06/05/2009 21:08

thanks, will relax now. am very excited about imminent poo though, it was kind of volcanic last time, slow but just kept coming, great for a poo train spotter!

ds used to do one huge explosion once a week. He was bf.

spicemonster · 06/05/2009 21:18

My DS used to go for nearly 2 weeks. As long as he seems fine in himself, plenty of wet nappies, don't worry.

It's not fun when it arrives though!

FearOfThePig · 07/05/2009 16:44

No poo yet, but his trampy farts are becoming increasingly antisocial.
Called hv and they said if it goes above 10 days call gp, but not to worry before then as it's perfectly normal, just like you all said. Can't wait for the explosion to arrive!!!
Thanks for advice and help.
