She is saying it is painful, she also has a chesty cough which she has had for a while and has not cleared yet, do you think they are related? Of course she would wake up with it today when there is no dr open. She is up and about and watching a dvd so not flat out or anything. Would she be likely to have mumps or just an ear, nose ,throat thing??

I would give NHS direct a quick ring if with were my dd.

Has she been vaccinated against mumps?

IwishIwasmorechocolatey · 13/04/2009 10:02

It sounds like mumps. Has she had her mmr and the booster?

I'd give NHS direct a call, or your out of hours Drs

no my kids havent had MMR - feel sick now. Would mumps just be on one side, do they give antibiotics for it?

Yes mumps can be just on one side or on both. Do get in touch with the out of hours doctors service.

letswiggle · 13/04/2009 10:10

mumps is a virus, there's a vaccine but no treatment.

Elibean · 13/04/2009 10:12

do call doctor, to get a diagnosis if possible, but don't panic re mumps...I had it (twice, once on each side) when I was 8 - my db had it at the same time, aged 4 - and although its a bit painful, we were both fine. Give painkillers for pain (calpol, ibuprofen) and I remember drinking room temp drinks through a straw was best - not too cold or too hot.

Northernlurker · 13/04/2009 10:15

I had mumps as a baby (pre vaccine days) and I was fine. You do need to get medical advice though. If it isn't mumps the only thing I can think of is an enlarged lymph gland and that should also be checked by a doc.
