Is it bad, do I do A&E or NHS Direct?

insertwittynicknameHERE · 25/03/2009 17:49

belgo · 25/03/2009 17:52

insertwittynicknameHERE · 25/03/2009 17:55

Ds ate one of these at about the same age. Iirc nhs direct said it was fine, only 1 type is bad but i cant remember exactly why.

louii · 25/03/2009 18:01

Silica gel is fine if eaten, dont worry.
Maybe just soem extra water to drink.

thegreatescape · 25/03/2009 18:01

i work in A&E, and we had same situation. Apparently, it doesn't harm them.

louii · 25/03/2009 18:02

Poisons unit number
(0844 892 0111)

Honestly though its ok.

bruxeur · 25/03/2009 18:02

Water, rest ,keep an eye on her, don't use some random blog as a medical resource. Or at least don't let it panic you.

ummadam · 25/03/2009 18:03

Hope NHSdirect is being helpful.

TOXBASE (the uk national poisons advice service) says they are considered non toxic and does not need routine hospital referral.

In 2004 there were reports of some sachets containing calcium hydroxide in imported chinese cookies and they were more scary but plain old silica gel is apparently ok if accidently eaten.

insertwittynicknameHERE · 25/03/2009 18:06

Oh, DH is back now and calmed me down lol. These have come out of a shoe box from Spain (my bloody aunt and her high heeled shoes for a 16mo)

insertwittynicknameHERE · 25/03/2009 18:51

Oooh I feel better now, NHS direct called back and said all should be okay as they are low toxicity and to give DD some milk if I was concerned at all.

Thank you everyone.

that's good.

LEMAGAIN · 26/03/2009 10:40

don't want to worry you and im sure its nothing to worry about, but did you tell NHS direct that this was from a spanish manufacturer - just to be sure, its probably just the same, silica gel is silica gel just good to be sure.

LEMAGAIN · 26/03/2009 10:43

lindenlass - am and ROTFL at your second link "I just thought i'd eat a couple of the pellets and see what happened" oh, OH - it hurts!! (my tummy, from pmsl!)
