I have a 2.5 dd who for 3 weeks has had a really bad cough. She is coughing so much that she is brining up handfuls of mucas/phelgm and on occasions is bringing up what she has recently eaten. When to a&e on Saturday and saw horrid doctor who said nothing wrong with her adn sent us home!!! Got worse yesterday so went back and saw another doctor who advised that she has a virus and a build up of mucas at back of throat, no sign of chest infection which is good but advised only thing that will assist is steam. Put her in steam filled bathroom for an hour last night which seemed to help, no coughing but today is back to square 1. Can you please advise if you know of any other remedies that might help, she is not eating anything as keeps bringing it back and she keeps getting really upset everytime she coughts. (sorry for long thread) xx

I used to get terrible coughs - the thing that sorted them out in the end was giving up milk. Sounds drastic - but dh can tell if I've accidentally had some in something (eg a scone) by how I'm sounding....

I camped in the bathroom with my dd1 the last time she had croup. Literally, got the duvets and slept in the steamy bathroom all night.

Try to keep her of diary for a few days, if at all possible. My DD was allergic when a baby but now can tolerate it in small doses. But if she gets too much she developes a lot of mucus and and a cough. She has small sinus' and the mucus comes out her eyes. Craniel oestopathy helps drain mucus away. Just seen mistlethrush's post

Have you tried Vicks on the soles of her feet at night? With socks on, obviously.

Its a tip I read about on Mumsnet. I tried it with DS last night (he's only been coughing for 5 days so sympathies to you OP) and he slept through, despite coughing badly before bed and it all starting up again as soon as he got up in the morning.
