Wax in ears - is it safe to use olive oil to soften it?

DS (2.5) has had huge blobs of wax in his ears for as long as I remember. He doesn't seem to be affected by it, but the blobs seem to literally block the entire canal. Can I try softening it with olive oil? What's the technique? Do warm it a bit then pour it in with a spoon?

warm it gently and put a few drops in, you can get those droppers from the chemist for a few pence.
i usually warm the oil by putting it on the radiator for half an hour.

do it at night and stick a bit of cotton wool in after if he'll tolerate it.

Thanks joosey Then do I have to persuade him to stay still, or can he run around with it?
