Poor DS 16 months) had to be in hospital for 4 days on a drip because of severe vomiting and diarrhoea. He is out now but still suffering from around 20 bouts of diarrhoea a day. Poor thing has has had the skin burnt off his bum and I dont know what to do as he screams in pain every time he has a bowel movement. Help please has anyone had experience of this bug and is there anything I can put on his bum to soothe the pain!

Poor little thing. Does Sudocrem do any good?

brimfull · 27/02/2009 21:02

he needs a layer of barrier type cream {sudocream} works well.

puppie · 27/02/2009 21:03

Hi DG, not really, it protects very briefly but his poo seems to be eating into him! For the most part we have put mats down and left his nappy off to minimise contact with his skin but we dont know what to do as he wants to go to sleep and off course he will have to have a nappy on now.

Have you tried putting a layer of vaseline which is pretty inpenetrable onto him?

Poor boy

Metanium is good for healing nappy rash.

princessmel · 27/02/2009 21:06

dd had that aswell, here's my thread I started www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=general_health&threadid=297581-dd-been-in-hospital-for-3-days-just-had- to#5972872

MmeLindt · 27/02/2009 21:06

I would try Weleda nappy cream, it is good.

Or even better, if you can get it, Bepanthen cream.

RiojaLover75 · 27/02/2009 21:08

Another vote for Metanium here! Hope DC is feeling better soon.

spicemonster · 27/02/2009 21:09

Metanium is great for healing nappy rash but I think it needs a while to work doesn't it? Not sure if you've got a baby with diarrhoea it would work.

puppie · 27/02/2009 21:16

princessmel thanks for your thread, we had a very similar experience to you and a few others. I took DS to the GP Monday morning and he said it was Rotavirus and that I musnt be worried about it and that DS would be fine and he would not recommend anything. Monday afternoon DS was non responsive, grey and his eyes were rolling back in his head. WTF!! If I had listened to my GP and not worried about it DS would be dead!

I am going to give all you other ladies suggestions a go! I am desperate. Where can I get Metanium?

Tesco

BakewellTarts · 27/02/2009 21:17

Poor little chap. Can he keep down a dose of Calpol / Calprofen? It might help. Otherwise perhaps a barrier crean.

SlightlyMadScotland · 27/02/2009 21:17

(in a yellow box with a toothpaste style tube inside)

Warning it stains fabrics - so be cautious when using

princessmel · 27/02/2009 21:27

It's so scary isn't it
And dd was grey too. Very upsetting.

We have that yellow cream, it's good. (apart from staining)

BUT when ds had a really bad nappy rash the gp prescribed some cream for it. If it was me I'd call my out of hours gp and get a prescription ( we collect ours from the minor injuries dept of our hosp when the surgery is shut). If his bottom is bleeding then that is serious enough to call. imo

puppie · 27/02/2009 22:04

SMS we gave him a dose of infant nurofen, werent sure if it was the right thing to do or if it would work for that kind of thing. We just tried to put a nappy on him and he screamed, so we have lined it with cotton wool so its not rubbing on the raw skin.

My dd had rota virus 3 times as a baby, i used to swear by conotrane its not on prescription but you have to ask for it at the pharmacy as its behind counter

thumbwitch · 01/03/2009 00:08

poor little thing - be careful the cotton wool doesn't stick to the raw skin, though. Have you got an old cotton hanky you could put inside the nappy instead?

I was going to suggest egg white as well but see someone else has got there first - you could also try some aloe vera gel as it's good for burns, inluding diarrhoea burns - and lots of air time as you are already doing.

I have no experience of baby rotavirus attacks, but have had a dose of it myself - most unpleasant! The best way to stop the diarrhoea is to give a diet that contains no fat, if possible - the fat irritates the gut into continuing the diarrhoea. Lots of fluid and dry carbohydrate is the way to go. The sooner the diarrhoea stops, the better.

puppie · 03/03/2009 13:45

Thank you ladies! DS on the mend now and diarrhoea has finally stopped. I found the metanium and egg white good. Watch out for this virus as my HV said there is a lot of it going around (south east) and can be dangerous if DC becomes dehydrated (as we found out!)

Hi - metanium is great, but it's not a good barrier, so I put it on first, then slather sudocrem on top. Good luck, we also had a hospital stay a couple of weeks ago for the same thing, but we havent had the same bottom problems - poor you - glad that's better now

Dillydaydreamer · 03/03/2009 14:29

Hi I don't know if your GP would allow it but it could be worth asking for a topical aneathetic cream to sooth the pain. Instilagel/emla cream numbs the skin. Also you are doing the best thing keeping the nappy off mostly. Make sure his bum is bone dry before putting any cream on then lather with vaseline, then sudocrem before it goes back on iyswim. Water can't penetrate vaseline grease and sudocrem helps healing. Lather it on so his bottom is completely white though, don't rub it in.
