Three year old dd has ear infection at the moment, ear has been weeping so ear drum may be perforated and she is on course of anti-biotics. We are going away at the weekend to a hotel with a pool and she will want to join her brothers in the pool. Have told her this may not be possible. Have ordered some swim earplugs and earband online, does anyone have any experience of using these and do they really help keep the ear free from the poolwater. Any advice appreciated about swimming and children prone to ear infections greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It's going to be really hard, but you'll just have to keep her out of the water, especially if the ear drum is at risk.
Ime, from having repeated infections as a child, it was only when I stopped using earplugs that the infections stopped.
It seemed as if whatever nasties were in the water stayed inside if I wore plugs (technical explanation, I know).

I use ear band and plugs to try and prevent ear infection in our dd who is prone - it seems to help from a prevention point. But I would not advise letting your dd go in the water with an active ear infection.

The band and plugs alone would not completely stop water getting in her ears. You could try with a silcon swimming hat over the top to keep it all in place. That should stop most water getting in.

Bur if your dd has a current ear infection she would probably not want the plugs in her ears as is prob v sensitive.

If the plugs are the mouldable ones they kind of sit in the outside bit of the ear and are held in place by the band but my dd says they hurt her ears. She is 5.

Thanks for advice. (Just realised I had posted twice as I had written ds first time in my sleep-deprived state - have had two up during nights this week but the other one has a throat infection!!!).

Will stay at poolside and not use the earplugs.
