Ds has a high temperature (39.5 in one ear) the other ear reads 35.5 - 36 consistently. I have taken his temp under his arm and it's 38.8 which I think is about 39.8 orally so WHAT THE FRICK is going on with his other ear? Why isn't it working? Oh I have dosed him and stripped him off already and he's having a drink which is why I'm asking now....

Ear thermometers don't work properly if there is a lot of wax in the ear-one of my DSs has very waxy ears and the ear thermometer is useless for him!
It could be that one of your Ds's ears has some wax in it?

Ahhhh. I did wonder about that. It looks clear from the outside (I know that doesn't mean anything!) I took him to the doctor yesterday who gave him a cursory look over (didn't even bother to look in his ears until I asked her to ) and they were fine then but I know things can change quickly. He just doesn't seem to be able to throw off this bug and he's usually really resilient
