Toenail fell off - anything we need to do?

A month or two back DS got his toe caught in a toy ironing board (this happened at nursery, was an accident, not a big deal). The toenail went black and gradually got looser and looser - as it didn't seem to be hurting him, or infecting, I thought it was best to leave it alone.
Now the nail has come off leaving a little bit of regrowing nail at the bottom. Is there anythign I should do (he is not complaining of pain, it's clean and not inflamed) or will it just sort itself out?

Thanks bloss and knickers. Yes there is a bit of nail - so I guess it will gradually grow back to a normal length.
