3 lots of antibiotics in 3 months

My dd who is 4 has tonsilitus for the 3rd time in as many months. She was given amoxicillin in November then was ill again on 27th Dec and wasn't going to take the antibiotics (penicillin)but she got worse and so she took the medicine. That was only 3 weeks ago and yesterday she was miserable and off her food again and last night she had a temperature. Today I looked in her mouth and she has loads of white spots on her tonsils AGAIN. The doctor has prescibed ammoxicillin again but said to maybe wait til tomorrow to see if she gets worse. I know that taking antibiotics this many times in this many months isn't good is it? What shall i do?

Did you mention your concerns to your gp?
I do think that they are generally better about prescribing only when necessary. But that is only my experience. When my eldest was a baby (20 years ago) they seemed to be much more casual about prescribing abs. When I had my dd several years later I definately noticed a change. When I took her with an ear infection that would have definately been prescibed abs with ds1 I was told to give it a couple of days as it would probably get better on it's own...and it did.

You have my sympathy though, my ds2 had constant tonsilitis at your daughter's age. Hope she gets better soon.

DD ia permenantly on flucloaxcillin with additional Augmentin if she becomes chesty, whilst it is a worry that your DD has been presribed ab's again, her flora will recover quickly.

It sounds like she may need review by the ENT docs if she continues to get recurrent tonsilitis?

Yes the doc mentioned ENT if it comes back again. She is still hot this morning and miserable and tired and doesn't want to eat anything but i'm still not sure about giving her the medicine.
I used to get tonsillitus constantly too, when i was a teenager and i remember the antibiotics finally not working at all and I had them whipped out. Don't think they do that so much anymore.
think i am being a bit selfish too and thinking that i need to go to work on Tuesday and will she be well enough to go to nursery without the antibiotics !

Same here DOris - DS is on constant antibiotics. If you have concerns saramoon speak to your gp or asked to be refered to a peadiatrician at your local hospital.

Thanks, just called a friend who has suggested taking the medicine and when it comes back - which she says it will - to ask to be referred to ENT or a paediatrician and keep hassling to get them to take the tonsils out.

Good advice from your friend, saramoon. My dd2 has just had tonsils and adenoids out (she's 2) so they definitely DO still do that, altho dd's was done for different reasons (apnoea etc).

Just wanted to add, when dd had loads of ABs last year, we gave her kids' acidophilus powder in her milk, and her tummy recovered a lot faster. Good luck, hope you get referred fast!
