ds2 is 8 weeks old and is constipated. saw gp fri who gave lactulose, i then realised it had lactose in it which he is intolerant to so rangback and e advised give him melted brown sugar. this worked fri pm,then by sun he hadnt gone and was in alot of pain so i gave more sugar sun. saw paed mon (ds has reflux probs) who gave him docusol which actually says on label over 6 months but she said its ok and said give 1ml twice a day and up to 2.5ml if needed (on label its 2.5ml for 6 month old)gave him 1ml mon pm and nothing happened and through night still in pain so tues am increased to 2.5 and he then had very watery poo. that worried me so this am gave him 1.5ml trying to find right amount for him and nothing happened. again bad am with him trying to poo n pain o gave sugar bout hour and half ago and he did one big poo but hard (bout inch and half long sorry tmi) is this normal? dont know if i should ring doc or if takes a while??

my ds had to have docusol - was a bit older though I think but had bad problems with constipation with both my children. DD1 had lactulose which worked really well but DS2 took lactulose and it didn't work at all so we then moved on to docusol which did work really well - i think from memory he had it about twice a day and it did take a while to get the dose spot on - my theory was that it was better for him to be a bit watery but going rather than being bunged up. It took a long time for me to sort it as I persevered with the lactulose for too long and should have taken him to the dr earlier - he developed really bad sleeping habits due to all of this and he's now nearly 2 and only starting to sleep better now so my advice would be to get it sorted out as early and as best you can!

BReast fed or formula?

I ask because DS was constipated as a baby and he was formula fed. My Mum's GP advised me to add an extra oz of water to every feed. Worked for us.

formula. we had to change formula monday (by paed) but hes been like it for over a week. gp suggested for a dasy or 2 to do extra ounce of water but not any longer as he wouldnt get enough nutrients. we tried that over we and didn help...

We did it it as long as DS was on formula. Makes no difference to nutrients if they finish the bottle.

Question doc asked was when the baby poos is it dry and hard - if it is it can mean they need more liquid in with the formula. Try it for longer. If babe is finishing bottle he is getting nutrients.
