please let me know what you think about this childs eye.

I uploaded a new photo today to my background wallpaper on my desktop and noticed that in the photo one of dd2's eyes is red and the other is white.

I know this has been mentioned before and would appreciate it if you could take a look at the photo in my profile and let me know what you think.

Should I get her eyes checked out or could it just be the way the light has hit her eye? Would it be an optician that should look at her or the dr? Just wonder as dh and I are due at the optician for a check up soon anyway and could take her along.

I tried to make the pic as big as possible apologies if it's not to great.

How old is your DD? Optician don't normally expect to see children under 5 I'm told. DS has seen an optalmologist but only after referral by the HV.

I expect it's just a trick of the light, but when I had concerns about my child's eyes I went to the GP, who referred us to the hospital's eye clinic. If you are worried, I'd suggest doing the same thing. I'm sure an optician could examine her eyes, but (as far as I know) an eye clinic is equipped to look for a wider range of potential problems.

An optician or GP should be able to tell you whether or not the ' red reflex' is present in both eyes. The one-sided white eye thing makes people worry about retinoblastoma - a very very rare eye tumour. In most cases this is because the light wasn't hitting the eyes a the same angle.

Oh your little yellow box (book?) is there now - the picture isn't very clear but I think I can see what you mean. Is it solid red rather than a bit pink as you would get with conjunctivitis?

I would take her to the doctors too. I suspect that if she does have something medically wrong with her eyes they would refer her back to the GP anyway who would then refer on if needs be.

If it has been there for sometime and therefore not just the result of excessive eye rubbing or nose blowing I would take her. I have had a red eye occasionally but it clears up in about 48 hrs max. If not then I would go to the doctors.

I too would say that it's just a trick of the light, especially if it's only the one picture of her looking like that. But you've probably managed to worry yourself now anyway , so have her checked over by an ophthalmologist (it's them who do medical diagnoses and treatment of eye diseases). Your GP should be able to refer you.

It does look like a trick of the light though, she is looking of to the side rather than directly at the camera.

She also looks to be a bit old to have developed a retinoblastoma (I think that they are usually below 4?)

I think you should get it checked. I used to work on a kiddies eye unti and its probably nothing but these things are not tkaing the risk with.

As I said before, I expect it's a trick of the light. The potential problem I had in mind, though, was a squint - one of the things that alerted me to my child's squint was that flash photographs would show up very clearly that the eyes weren't looking in exactly the same direction and so the flash would reflect differently.

I think squint too.

Go and see the GP and ask him to look in her eyes and get a referral to the orthoptist.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Tonight I had a look through all the other photo's, these were taken when we were on holiday, and in all the other photo's she has either red eyes in both or just normal eyes. I've never noticed either or her eyes looking like that before.

When I took that photo we were on the subway and she was looking at her dad at the time so I think it might just be the way the light has hit her eye.

She's due at the dr's in the next couple of weeks for a check up anyway so will get them to have a look while she's there just to be on safe side.
