I would recommend using a vicks vaporiser. It has been a v good investment for me. They cost about £25, fill it up with water, plug in and it pumps out steam into the bedroom and really stops the coughing. My ds1 also gets scared of the dark when ill as he is up all hours so I use a night light. Hope you get a bit of rest tonight!

Oh dear poor her and you!

Can you sleep on her bed/floor to at least save you getting up and down to her?

Can you ask the chemist for something that you can give that would help reduce symptoms and help her sleep? Medised or something similar?

Keep any central heating off while she's in bed - I find if ds has a cough the dryness of the atmosphere makes it so much worse.

vaporiser sounds a really good idea. I wish I had thought about that when ds had the most awful tickly cough a couple of months ago!

Rub Vicks or Vaporub into her feet, put socks on her and she should sleep better and with less coughing. It works for my two!

Sleeping in her room is not an option as i am taller than her room is long. She is in the box room.
Heating not left on anyway.
Night light is a good idea.
Will perhaps give her some medised when she is due for something next. She can have it i assume at her age?
Regarding the vicks vaporiser (i think we have a similar one somewhere)would it matter how near she was sleeping to it? her cotbed is right in front of the plug socket.

ooh thanks solo will try that.
It wont burn her skin will it?

medised has an antihistamine which helps sleep particularly with bunged up noses. Not sure on the minimum age -but always works for dd who wakes with colds every 5 minutes

Leo9 · 29/12/2008 23:45

we do the vaporub on feet thing with ds, it's fine, it shouldn't irritate her skin - I take it she's not got particularly sensitive skin?

I have to say I would not be getting up and down to a child who was waking every '2 seconds' - that's not reasonable. When you say she won't sleep in with you - how/why?

MrsDoylesMole · 29/12/2008 23:46

Thanks chipkid

If i bring her into my room and in bed with me she will just cry all night the same as if she was in her own room. She just wont settle.

She has eczema but vicks should be ok on soles of her feet.

I don't think it'll burn her...I used it on my Dd at 18 months and it was fine. If you can use it on her in the usual fashion(chest/back), then I can't see any problem at all...

Nyx · 29/12/2008 23:58

When my dd (nearly 3) has a cough which keeps her awake at night it's Medised I use for her, we've found it to be a great cough suppressant. Also we have some vicks (or similar) in a bowl of hot water on or near the heater, it seems to help if she gets a bit wheezy with the coughing. Good luck, it's awful when they're not well, isn't it!

Nyx · 29/12/2008 23:59

Have to say, the vicks vaporiser SCL mentioned sounds good...may look at that myself!

MrsDoylesMole · 30/12/2008 00:00

Thanks all

will try vicks and medised
If that fails then i shall just mumsnet all night.

In that case I really would try the medised - if she's not comforted by coming in to your bed she must be feeling rotten and she obviously needs something like that to enable her to get back off. Poor thing! Hope you get some sleep tonight - it is grim isn't it - SO tiring....

MrsDoylesMole · 30/12/2008 00:05

Thanks Leo

Re the vaporiser and the plug socket just make sure the steam isn't going directly in your daughter's direction. Hope you have had more than 5 mins sleep!

chipkid · 30/12/2008 21:17

hows it going?

My dd has been unwell for over a week-flu type thing that her brother had the previous week and a half!

Medised is my salvation!

MrsDoylesMole · 30/12/2008 22:24

Hithanks for looking in
Well last night i thought we has some medised and then found out we didnt lol.Got some tonight though so fingers crossed. She did sleep last night but got me up about 7 or 8 times.
She still has her cough and isnt well but no worse thankfully. Her older sister has had the cough for a week or so but isnt ill with it.
