Big weight loss in 6 month DS

DS 6 months has been noticeably drinking less over the last few days. We did a rough weigh of him tonight after he brought up most of his bottle, by our measurement in the last 10 weeks he has dropped from 50th percentile to 0.4, which I am shocked. He has always had problems feeding, been on Gaviscon and finally GP suggested changing to soya formula, which did stop the vomiting. He is refusing solids, just not interested so we haven't been pushing it, and I am feeling upset that i haven't noticed before how much weight he had lost. I am going to GP tomorrow but any suggestions as to what might be wrong or what should happen, and can I insist on a peadiatric referral.

I would assist on a referal, sorry not really got any advice, just that you need to get him seen to. Don't worry about solids, he doesn't really need them at this age, just try and get him to drink as much milk as possible.

Good luck with the GP tomorrow

There are lots of different reasons why babies this age throw up a lot and have feeding problems. Often (but not always) it's reflux. Sometimes doing away with dairy really helps, sometimes babies just aren't that good at sucking, swallowing and breathing (DD wasn't).

Once your GP has excluded any other issues, such as tummy problems (for which you'd probably be referred to the gastro team), I would ask for a referral to a paediatric dietitian who can help you with different formulas and weaning. DD has hypotonia (weak muscle tone) which caused her reflux. Once she was strong enough to eat solids things improved a lot in the vomit department.

What happened when you went to the GP?

Have to monitor his weight for the next couple of weeks, keep on with the infasoy, and gaviscon, and keep perservering with the weaning. Having said that he has just vomited all over his face, out his nose, the HV (nice one)left a message so just about to phone her.
