DD born with a skin tag on her ear and failed her hearing screening - anyone with any experience of this

HI

I had DD on tuesday morning (1.42am) and she was given a hearing screening at about 9am-ish.
She was fine on her right hand side, but they couldn't detect a response on her left side. She has a small skin tag next to her ear, which I was told by the person doing the screening that this is often associated with hearing problems, but didn't seem able to tell me any more than this.
They did a further screening and still no response was picked up.
I have got an appointment for her at the audiology unit next week, but I wanted to try and find out as much as possible before then.
I would be grateful if anyone has any experience of this.
By the way if I don't reply, it's because I have got my hands full with my other DS's tonight as well as DD and DH is out...so I might not get chance to post again this evening! TIA

First of all congratulations

I don't have any experiance as such, but all 5 of my neices/nephews were born with 'skin tags' on their ears and 3 of the 5 eventually had them removed. Out of the 5, one of them failed the hearing screen and had to have several more tests - which concluded hearing was absolutely fine

My DD, also failed the hospital screening, twice and a further audiology appt was absolutely fine - they said that it was probably gunk from the birth still in the way thats all.

Hope everything turns out ok x

Congratulations!

As oneboy said, it's probably just gunk left behind in the ear canal. If you want more info on testing then this site has some very parent friendly info and their helpline is pretty good too.

Thanks for your responses.
My midwife did say that as she was a pool birth she is very likely to have lots of gunk / water still present and that she was surprised they did the hearing screening so soon after the birth, knowing that she was born in the pool.

Where I work if a baby "fails" its newborn hearing screen they won't test again until the next day as often due to gunk in the ear.
