Sore ulcers on tongue and grumpy little boy - any ideas?

Good evening - just wondered if anyone has had this and what it could be. DS has been unwell generally for the last few days (slightly grumpier than normal, sleeping in the day, off food, complaining of general itchiness) and has been complaining of a sore tongue. I had a look last night and he has quite a few little raised ulcers and his tongue looks a little swollen.
He has no other symptoms (temp 36.5) no rash going to loo fine etc. They have had a case of scarletina at school so I wondered if he coould have mild non-rash version of that? He has also had hand foot and mouth in the past and he hasn't got any blisters anywhere else.
Anyway, he has had some calpol, refused any supper and is generally not himself.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance...

was going to say hfm, but if he has had that I'm not sure if he can catch it again.

Has he been under the weather lately? My DS used to get horrible mouth ulcers after having a cold or if he is spoiling for something.

If he is really miserable with it, I'd call the OOH doctors and see if you can see someone tomorrow. If not, wait and see your own GP on Monday.

If, however, his tongue is swollen and getting worse I'd take him to A&E.

LeakyDAISYcal - He is obviously feeling a bit better because he is mucking around a bit now - and has gone off to bed fine.
I did wonder if you could get hfm twice. I'll keep an eye on him.
Any other ideas please do let me know.

my ds1 had a horrible ulcer on his tongue about 4 months ago - it was about the size of a 10p and went from the top to underneath and ended up infected.

i'd take him to the dr's on monday if its no better and check underneath his tongue in case its there too.

my ds1 was in agony and very sorry for himself and did end up with antibiotics.

Thank you. I'm hoping for a quite night and will look under his tongue tomorrow.
