Dh, who happened to be home on his lunchbreak when the call came, has gone up the school to collect him.

What do I need to do / look out for? I assume it is fine to give him calpol and just get him comfy on the sofa. And he is allowed to sleep isn't he?

He is 9 btw (not sure that makes any difference)

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

IMO just look for vomiting/nausea
worsening of headache
visual or auditory disturbance

calpol and comfy is the way I would go

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Dizziness/nausea on recovery
  • Loss of memory
  • Headache
  • Pale face from herertr5

Yes, he can sleep as long as he is rousable.

Quiet afternoon, take it easy, and give Calpol if he still has a headache.

Thanks guys

He has just arrived home, he looks a bit pale, and he was a bit unsteady on his feet. But he is talking and making sense, and even managing to joke

Have given him calpol, a pillow and a blanket and he is snuggled on the sofa.

Thanks for all the advice

Also be aware that the symptoms of concussion can take a while to be obvious.

My dd had a nasty knock to the head earlier this year and it wasn't until the next day that she started to feel really odd. In the end I took her to the dr who said she was mildly concussed and that it can take up to 2 weeks for the symptoms to disappear.

hippipotami · 21/11/2008 13:45

Oh smartiejake, thank you
I did not know that, I figured if he is fine right now, he will stay fine iyswim.

Okay, will have another look at symptoms of concussion so I know what to look out for..
